I don't think I will be able to handle another name change for Kencell/Celtel/Zain/x. And I think they should finally sell to someone who know how to run mobile networks and make money while doing it. I will not mind an Africa wide Safcom or someother company network. Dear Listers, If they change names once again as Washington predicted some months ago, then let them be assured they will just have to close their business in Mobile Telephony and maybe focus on Customer care, for that is what Zain can score a greater margin that other telcos. On a serious note, isn't there a law which prohibits a multinational or a national company from changing names before a certain period comes to an end, say after 30 or 45 years? Where is the KCA in all these? Or the Internation law of any sort here? Maybe a few African know there rights while the Majority opt to shy off the rights- talk! [?] And do you know who is grinning over this? The most conspicuous problem with Zain is probably the fear of being an entrepreneur. In my High school, I was informed that an entrepreneur is a risk taker, an investor and a business owner. The biggest entrepreneur in Kenya, as in the whole world is the government, which takes great risks to provide social services to the people. For Zain, the fear of strategically putting on blinders and focussing on reaching the target, is what aids in poor performance in the local industry. For instance, while Safaricom is thriving Zain is just as quiet as still waters ( and I don't know whether they are running deep). If you watch TV or listen to Radio, how many times do Zain adverts run in a single day as opposed to Safaricom's? This is an indication that the local environment is not any better foe Zain. But failing to diversify is failure itself. I hope this anticipated change of name, is a belated April Fools day joke! -- Solomon Mburu P.O. Seriously, whats up with Kencell / Celtel / Zain?? Where is it that they go wrong? is it wrong personnel, management? Weren't they the first network in Kenya? With the clearest network (atleast back then).. Someone told me that Zain-Kenya makes losses as compared to the other Zains - what is it that they do wrong? Am sure Orange would have given Safcom a run for their money had they been in the market for as long as Zain / Celtel / $bar Maybe they should leave it to skunks to manage... twende tukaweke asterisk huko.. hehehe Kind regards -Alex On Tue, Jun 9, 2009 at 11:29 PM, Njoroge Tito <titonjoroge@gmail.com> wrote:

I miss the good old Kencell running Alcatel 1000 E10 switches with the UNIX based control terminals... the French should take it back!!

According to reports all over the net, a very powerful French Telco with operations in Africa ( most likely Orange) has interests in buying Zain's operations in Africa for an estimated $12billion plus a discount of all the debts. However, Zain intends to hold on to its Sudanese operation. In light of this, I suspect Safaricom are watching the situation very very closely as Orange could turn out to be an even bigger nightmare than previously thought. I would be very concerned if I were Safaricom. On 10/06/2009, nyarotho kennedy <kenyarotho@gmail.com> wrote:

As they say, 'what goes around comes around.' I would have wished for some consolidation. I hate to have 4 phones. And then I saw some Chinese mockup with 4 sim-cards. How I wished I could have that technology on my Nokia. And that phone also had a zoom camera, a radio and a analogue TV with a huge antenna. All in one Chinese phone. Jesus! 2009/6/12 Phares Kariuki <pkariuki@gmail.com>
