Re: [Skunkworks] PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

If you can, do a technical masters in SA with an attachment at an SA tech firm. Get out of Kenya and see what more there is. Why SA? Because Europe or US will suck you in and I’ll invite the wrath of fellow skunks/skunkettes. Why a technical masters? Because standards are higher in SA than in Kenya and a bachelors degree is not enough. Not in this day and age. The attachment will expose you to industrial standards that most schools are not privy to. If you do stay in Kenya, try and get into Safaricom whose size implements IT at substantial levels. There may be others (feel free to enlighten me) but that’s all I know. Paul Korir, PhD +353 86 224 1966 +254 72 400 4767 Ordnung muß sein

Safaricom is not then only place where someone can gain experience. There are thousands of companies who have the Same thing to offer if not better. As a matter of fact try get a smaller company for experience as opposed to a big one, your effort bears more recognizable fruits sooner and you get to do more hands on work there. Big companies have a tendency to absorb people who then end up as ceremonial IT attaches messenger in departments than learning students. That's my believe and have seen it every where . I agree with Oliver, There are other small firms that have a way practicing knowledge management than safaricom and top companies. This reminds me of Kengens taking engineering interns to be messengers of the bosses, and call it experience!! :) On 15 June 2015 at 12:25, Oliver Ndegwa via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

While I agree that there are other companies with good experience, few have the scale and corporate culture that Safaricom has. Most small outfits give you good technical experience but pay very little (if at all). We can ignore the extreme cases (of interns being messengers). But I stand corrected... Professional growth comes with how well you can work within the given resources.....by resources i also include the work mates who aid in making you feel you are at the right place and doing the right things. So to that i think big companies are favourite place for P Growth but not to everyone..It then settles at personality. Hope I got something for the list members.... On 15 June 2015 at 02:36, Paul Korir via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Paul, I wonder how many KE techies have done these technical masters in SA and how they compare to those who haven't. In my short experience i have met quite a number of brilliant techies who don't even have passports. IT being *ubiquitous*, it all boils down to the foundation and individual passion. I have never worked for Safaricom but i imagine an organization with a very mature ICT infrastructure and quite elaborate procedures... I wonder whether such an organization would be ideal for someone yet to know what they want. On Jun 15, 2015 2:39 PM, "Dennis Chelimo via skunkworks" < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:
