New Online Payment System Comes to Phone Users in Tanzania
Mobile phone users in Tanzania will from March be able to shop online using a new payment system developed by a local firm, Wide International Network. According to the firm's chief executive Isaac Kitinya the proposed system integrates the Internet and mobile phone technology in such a way that users can pay for services offered by a cross section of firms courtesy of mobile telephony operators. "People will be able to transact business online in tourism, travel, sports and entertainment, web maintenance and solution and ticketing," Kitinya said.For instance, the tourism sector will be able to reach customers worldwide and get payments directly "once a deal is struck." Deputy Director National Payment Systems at the Bank of Tanzania Benard Dadi welcomed the system but argued it would be used more if the country speeded up the issuance of a national identity cards. According to Wide International Network, the system will offer about 30 services that run across businesses, government, learning institutions, faith-based organisations, health institutions, manufacturing and financial institutions. The banks will have an online banking facility which will provide online support, reasonable response time, easy to use interface and a secure environment. All transfers will end up in the hands of the bank thus increasing banking access and creating virtual customers worldwide. Despite the many players in the tourism industry -- booking offices, travel agents, site owners, hotels -- the Wide International Network system will merge all services into a single transaction performed anywhere. Here is the simple story of what is happening here...very common story in TZ A young ambitious guy (who learned dreamweaver while doing his certificate in computer applications) comes up with this mobile payment idea and has no idea on how to do it. He goes to his rich relative who is 52 with lots of money and nothing to do with it. Tells his idea and being the most learned fella in the computer world within the family, they know he can do everything. The boy is given $50k for the project and is promised support by his uncle in politics with all connections. Now the money is finished and when he says he has it done (In dreamweaver or frontpage), to cover the 50k and trying to get more is not successful because he says its for licensing and all, his politician relative tries to get favors at BOT (Central bank in TZ) and they start publicizing it. The moment BOT agrees, the boy will go "mitini" as they say it here. Oh, and we shall see the end of an ambitious career. Am not hating, just first hand info. David. Save for the clutter on the homepage, the sign up process works. I went as far registering which service(s) I provide and will be billing for. The glitch at that point turned out to be that the system couldnt `remember` what service I had registered. I cant tell whether the payment module works because I dont have a Tz mobile number. And am sure there are a few skunkers in Tz willing to give feedback; Wabongo mpo? Now the money is finished and when he says he has it done (In dreamweaver or frontpage), to cover the 50k and trying to get more is not successful because he says its for licensing and all, his politician relative tries to get favors at BOT (Central bank in TZ) and they start publicizing it.
The moment BOT agrees, the boy will go "mitini" as they say it here. Oh, and we shall see the end of an ambitious career.

Registration works. It even signs you up for "Live Animal" purchase by default. I have a TZ line, it tells you you are now subscribed, nothing on the phone, nothing on email.
