What is the difference between an AP and Wireless Router?

Dear Skunks and Skunkettes, Could someone please explain to me the difference between an AP (Access Point) and Wireless Router? I have done a googling and I am now even more confused than before. I want to buy a wireless router but I have seen some people mention ""wireless router with built in AP" and others say just "wireless router". I want to connect to the internet at least 40 computers in a building with 6 floors and thick walls. So, please friends, explain to me in simple kindergarten english or kiswahili or kikuyu or kimeru...what is the difference between an AP (Access Point) and Wireless Router? Timo.

I can explain to you in Dholuo kindergarten: 1. Look at a wireless Access Point more like the kawaida Fast Ethernet switch, except in this case it uses WiFi, instead of cables. 2. A wireless Router too, is more like your kawaida wired router, except that it can accept wired clients (if it has switch ports) as well as wireless clients. Most wireless routers will have at least 4 ethernet ports for some LAN devices, besides the WAN port. All wireless routers have a built-in Access Point functionality otherwise the "wireless" part of the name would be useless. PS: If you are going to rely on the wireless router to handle that many clients, better ensure it is a "business"-class type, not those ones meant for "home". You did not ask any other questions so I stop there - at the "what is the difference" level:) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ I can't hear you -- I'm using the scrambler. I don't know if its Skunkworks business to explain the difference, kwani Skunkers have gone this low? Isn't this not even a basic hardware question? This is an abuse of Skunkworks QoS. Osotsi On Sat, Aug 6, 2011 at 3:44 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

@Osotsi, What you have just done is the same thing that was being discouraged on this forum last week, IIRC. So, it's better to just keep quiet if you see no reason/point in assisting a fellow. This murume has even googled but you know just too well that Google requires nice keywords else you can google forever. i'd suggest you by the wireless-N versions. so if you want an omni-directional AP, by the "picostation M2", and if you want a uni-directional one [60-degrees i think], go for the "nanostation m2". since they are wireless-N devices, they have throuputs at either 150mbps or 300mbps. ... there's a shop in the old-mutual building, kimathi street, that sells them for around 8k. same building as bloomerg, but on the second floor... i think.
@JDSKK, thanks for the tip. Is that where YASTLABS is operating from or is this a compe to them? It would be nice to have several suppliers for UBNT products in NBI because as it is, the prices in Nairobi are beyond the sky.

yeah, i've seen those Belkin ads around... but wthe pico/nanostation are outdoor-usable, and thats a major plus. since i bought mine just over a year ago, ive been placing it on roofs both at home and school (KU)... the connectivity is marvellous (though since the engineers at butterfly-wifi went on their never-ending holiday, its been off, just there on the roof bearing the weather & winds) On 8/9/11, Timothy Mutugi <timothymutugi@gmail.com> wrote:
