To networking professionals, is it normal to be more attracted to CLI than GUI Regards, Martin Chege

Hey Martin, No cause for alarm. This is quite normal in some people. Just the same way some men are attracted to skinny women while others like some meat. However, if you feel that this attraction is going overboard, you should speak to a CLI counselor. :-) Rgds On Tue, Mar 4, 2014 at 7:32 AM, martin chege <mcnjoroge@gmail.com> wrote:

lol, Lenya, what a analogy. I wonder what the techie-ladies will say. Martin, it depends on how geeky one feels. But CLI make you really sharp and understand what is happening in the background. ______________________ Mwendwa Kivuva, Nairobi, Kenya. twitter.com/lordmwesh .co.ke OFFER @ Ksh1000+VAT, .me.ke OFFER @Ksh250+VAT, while stocks last [?] On 3 March 2014 21:08, Anthony Lenya <tlensya@gmail.com> wrote:

Over the years, I'm constantly trying to use GUIs thinking that they're a more modern way of doing stuff ... but in the end, the CLI always comes ahead as better. Anyway, even in 2014, the CLI is usually the best way to get technical tasks accomplished on a computer. -- Kili - Cloud for Africa: kili.io Musings: twitter.com/varud <https://twitter.com/varud> More Musings: varud.com About Adam: www.linkedin.com/in/adamcnelson On Tue, Mar 4, 2014 at 9:41 AM, Jangita Nyagudi <jangita.nyagudi@gmail.com>wrote:

I think nothing beats CLI. And for Windows admin, PowerShell is a really powerful tool for Exchange and other basic Windows admin tasks. If you are using Office 365, then you will realize there are things that you can only do with CLI and not the GUI. And it allow for faster processing of many items and you can import all these for a text files and process them at the same time all with one command. GUI is good for simple tasks, but it has it's limitations and it is not very versatile. On Tue, Mar 4, 2014 at 9:50 AM, Adam Nelson <adam@varud.com> wrote:

I mix both, for simple tasks like joining a wireless network i use GUI (if its available) Its easier to right click, enter password and enter than ifconfig wlan0 up iwlist wlan0 scan iwlan wlan0 essid <networkname> key <wireless key> dhclient wlan0 BUT for getting down and dirty like routing, network diagnosis, multiple interface management, traffic shaping - I dip into CLI Also GUI are mostly wrappers of CLI commands so they never really get to be as flexible as CLI On 4 March 2014 17:18, Stephen Munguti <kamitu.sm@gmail.com> wrote:

The CLI's have it. Its more fun, and it really brings out the joy of working on a system. Alot of folks who really know their stuff will be CLI fanatics. I am in there as well - started off with DOS 6.2, then to Linux and Cisco and Juniper. Regards On Tue, Mar 4, 2014 at 5:18 PM, Stephen Munguti <kamitu.sm@gmail.com> wrote:

CLI one obvious advantage in the NetOps and SysOps universe is speed when is really needed, remember most of the times you are trying to troubleshoot a network remotely from all sorts of connectivity. R D On Tue, Mar 4, 2014 at 6:02 PM, Anthony Lenya <tlensya@gmail.com> wrote:

Perfectly normal; CLI on any day if you know what you are doing. Without wishing to start another Posix vs. M$ thread, it is the reason techies find it hard to work with Windows Servers. That is not to say that M$ does not have a CLI, the problem is that the entire platform is set up to lead/guide everyone to the GUI. BR.
