Hi good people, I'm up about the net and I come across the Unilever website. It loads on my machine as if its on a localhost i.e http://unilever/ http://unilever/innovation/ http://unilever/mediacentre/ ..and so on all load as is. I know of re-write rules but this one blew me away. Can anyone explain this? Am on an AK link, that could be a factor too. Regards

It's a browser feature. Your browser adds the 'www.' and the '.com'. On Thu, Jul 30, 2009 at 3:03 PM, Paul Njoroge <njorogekamau@gmail.com>wrote:

This has nothing to do with AK. Well at least on FF you can access any website by just typing http://anything and it will resolve as long as it has a .com based extension. am not sure if other browsers favor .coms in this way. SO to have it work on your website you need your website to have a .com extension Phares Kariuki wrote:

From where i am it doesnt load any faster than other sites on average. Maybe AK is caching those pages locally or they are plugged into the fiber. i donno. The browser doesnt rewrite code. I know of servers that strip out any subdomains including the www from domain names (like mine) and resolve to http://hostname.com to. so f you make a common mistake and type something like www.sub-domain.domain.com if sub-domain is a valid sub-domain it will strip it out just the www and the site still loads. if it is invalid it will strip out the www plus the sub-domain name and you are left with domain.com if it receives a http request with just domain. t will still resolve. Not entirely true. I use FF as well but the phenomena described is only true when you are on AK link. If you throw in a proxy (external to AK network) into FF, it doesn't happen. I dont use AK and it works fine. am using FF 3.5.1. and FF 3.0.12 ( my normal work setup is such that i use two or sometimes 3 comps at the same time. Each on different networks. today am working with two and they are both resolving regardless of the domain name and as long as the domain name ends in .com it will resolve. so i did a bit and digging and this is what i found that its a feature on FF called Domain Guessing. http://www.mozilla.org/docs/end-user/domain-guessing.html Quoting the same page Domain Guessing has a couple important limitations: 1.bla bla bla 2. Inconsistent use. Domain Guessing affects URLs that have only a hostname ( http://mozilla/index.html) but not fully qualified domain names, "FQDNs" ( http://www.mozilla.org).
