Safaricom Dongle on Windows RT Tablet
I have a friend who has a Windows RT tablet running Windows 8. It wont pick the Safaricom modem and gives an error that the device is not supported. Early adopters. They always bear the brunt of the teething problems. Ask David Kiania - a perennial "early adopter" :) Well, shouldn't the person ask M$ for support? Or just use the WiFi hotspot on their Smart Phone? I don't think there is any Broadband modem built into any of the Windows RT or even the Ultrabooks in the market - with the exception of those dual Windows 8+Android versions. Windows RT can run legacy applications, even though it appears to have a desktop mode, which is not functional. I guess the modem application is a legacy application, so no luck getting a modem to work. I wonder why Microsoft didn't think of a GSM version of the Surface, but I guess that could be on the way but currently it is putting off a lot of adopters.
Its a strategy, they just wanted to reduce a PC to a tablet, but then, the next Surfaces will definitely have a SIM or LTE functionality as thats the future. I think new bigger (hard disk / Memory wise) Surface's are in production now as we speak. Windows RT is not real Windows 8 and so doesnt support most if not all programs we use in windows. If I were you, I would have waited for Windows 8.1 or 9, most of the feedback regarding Windows 8 has been sorted in these versions.
