Google Maps on iPad

So, I have this pilot colleague who has been bugging me for some time now, that I install Google Maps on his iPad. I am not like the Ok3ch'es of Apple Cult, so I actually don't have an iPad to play with. It's been a hell handling this but finally we found the clue. We could not get this app because on his Itunes Account, the country was set to Kenya. At some point, an error on iTunes store became so helpful. It told us the App is not allowed for this damn country. So all we did was to change the country to the UK, and then enter a UK address as the shipping address and voila! I hate Apple. Why do they think that Kenyans should not run Google Maps on iPad? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ I can't hear you -- I'm using the scrambler. its not google's beef, its your government. As far as I know its illigal to take pics of government buildings in Ke right? @Steve, First, I need to apologize for a misleading subject line. Please 's/Maps/Earth/g' for relevance. If it's true that it's illegal to take pics of govt buildings in KE, then that must be really stupid. I only know that there are designated facilities of which the law prohibits pple from taking pics. Anyway, I still doubt what you mean by Google complying especially as far as the installation of Google Earth on iPad is concerned. I can easily install Earth on a Windows PC while in Kenya. Why Apple makes it so difficult for iPad is what I don't understand. On Tue, Dec 20, 2011 at 13:42, Steve Obbayi <steve@sobbayi.com> wrote:

By the way its been more than 5 years since I went past statehouse. Isnt the no photographing sign still there? Nways, Trust me. Google uses a lot of third party code and content from third parties same goes for Apple and a lot of software companies in the west. Don't assume some of the hardware you buy locally is the same as that bought in the states These third party companies might license their content based on regions, countries or sorts. There are so many other reasons why one might do this. too much to elaborate here. The details can get messy. Today you cannot just legally distribute your software to every corner in the world well at least not if you are subject to US laws or rather the individual states laws. Kenya ICT policies are basically non existent. so i guess everything goes if you are developing from Kenya. get the drift? These laws in the west are based also on how the laws of the "foreign" governments are structured and in line with agreements between the two governments. and many other parameters as well. So Google, Apple et al have to comply. Take for example China only recently (last week) approved the iPhone 4s to be officially sold in China. Correct me if am wrong. Now in Kenya there is no such thing. Developing software in the US and selling it out of state or out of the US is counted as an Export.. different regulations, different rules... I have worked both sides of the Atlantic and I can tell you the rules change once the plane touches down on either side. In Kenya you might be used to buying stuff, downloading movies, using illegal software etc without much thought towards it and the government wont come after you... companies like M$ are then forced to police the situation. In the west its different. So for these companies to open up their platforms, you need to start looking at the Kenyas ICT policies... again I could be wrong. Maybe Apple just feels your leeching on their store bandwidth :) Something to chew on. Explain how M$ allows you to purchase apps fro their market place as a Kenyan but you cannot be a developer if registered from Kenya? or I have two accounts on iTunes a US account and a Kenyan account. On the same computer, I cant purchase some content including e-books if I log in from my Kenyan account but all is well as long as I go in using my US account? I am no software legal expert so if someone has the definite reason they can bring it out. ----- Original Message ----- | From: "Odhiambo Washington" <odhiambo@gmail.com> | To: "Skunkworks Mailing List" <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> | Sent: Tuesday, December 20, 2011 3:12:54 PM | Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Google Maps on iPad | @Steve, | First, I need to apologize for a misleading subject line.
