I have just confirmed from the Zain Customer Service desk that indeed their data service has been down since 10:45 can you imagine? I saw the E icon disappear from my fone and I have not been able to access any site or services. What's even more surprising is the fact that there's no one on skunks who's raised the red flag on this. Why the double standard, we are keen to jump on Safcom for the shortest downtime and let Zain get away with this? It is apparent that we seriously need another mobile data service. I am willing to put my money on Orange. Grrrrrrrhhhhhh!!!! Apparently I have been able to use my Zain phone for browsing all day, without any hitches. I've however, noticed that the use of modem is was not working a few minutes ago, as I'm able to download, upload and read my mails using the modem. On double standards, I have noticed that too. When one mentions any outage on or issues with Safaricom, everybody points an accusing finger but when it is about Zain... well, we tend to go silent as though it is an inexistent company in Kenya. Possible explanations: 1. Sometimes biased criticism is the strongest form of endorsement. Maybe guys expect zain not to perform well and doesn't disappoint. People have set high standards for Safcom. Kinda like many may complain if, eg, Argentina doesn't make it to World Cup but not if Kenya doesn't. No double standards. 2. More people are on safcom and therefore safcom downtime is likely to affect more than zain would. Game of numbers. 3. Guys really hate safcom and will blow a single screw up out of proportion. 4. People are just biased. On 10/12/09, saidimu apale <saidimu@gmail.com> wrote:

i would go with number 2. zain has few data users; though there was a thread about zain last week. About reliability, am yet to hear of a data provider who doesnt disappoint. On 12/10/2009, Tech List Kenya <techlistkenya@gmail.com> wrote:

@Kiania,
How many skunks do you know who use Zain data services? Your statement there almost point to some folks you know use them, but who decided to go silent. I'd say it just happened noone had noticed, so you did it first. Conversely, your statement appears to indicate you have Zain's interest at heart than we think. Generally, we only raise the red flag when usage fails, unless there are skunks who've taken it upon themselves to be NOCs for all the network providers.

@ Wash, It doesn't matter how many skunks use Zain Data services. What matters is there are people who depend on whatever data service available for communication and it is a personal or corporate choice. There are many theories as to why no one in the forum raised the issue, save for Kiania. A probability here is that there are few people who are subscribed to Zain Data Service, which is true, but they count, isn't it?
Conversely, your statement appears to indicate you have Zain's interest at heart than we think.
Methinks, it was Kiania's choice of raising the red flag, because he was offline for the most of the day, yesterday. I also use Zain's services (Zap, Voice and Data etc) but that does not mean I have an interest in the company. It's a choice I made when we had Kencell.

@Solomon, Are you supporting the fact that failure of someone else (other than Kiania) to raise the red flag on the issue amounts to double standards? For that is the main issue. I still do maintain that that isn't the case. Several theories abound but two aspects stand out: No skunk had noticed it. Some skunk had noticed but did not feel like reporting the same to the forum. There is no such obligation for any skunkworks members to report downtimes, or is there? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

@ Wash, I do not support the failure of another person to raise the red flag to amount to double standards. My belief here is that whether Safcom was down or not, the way we tend to criticize them is not in equal standards as when another telco has issues. Probably, we should go back to Kiania's statement and read between the lines - he probably was informing us of the downtime he experienced since 10 yesterday morning. If I had noticed that, I would have raised it too. As I said in response to Kiania, I used my phone the whole of yesterday for browsing without any hitches, yet I was on Zain. The issue of double standards, comes in when we don't want to point fingers where it deserves. Safaricom has been in the news for wrong information, and the amount of criticism they get is too much. Does it make them the most prone to criticism? No. It is a way of making them learn from a mistake and improve. Skunkworks are not obligated to report on any downturn experienced on any telco. My thoughts. -- Solomon Mburu P.O. Box 19343 - 00202 Nairobi Cell: (+254-0) 735 431041 Man is a gregarious animal and enjoys agreement as cows will graze all the same way to the side of a hill! Zain data sucks! Many of us got used to the notion that they will do something huko 2030 and jumped ship. Safcon on the other hand, who deliver most of the time, is proverbial 'Uncle Sam' (paid your way through college but molested you!) Pick your poison...
