Energy Discussions: KPLC friend or foe?

One of my issues with Kenya Power is how they relate to their customers. In some areas if you miss payment by even one day they cut your power (even if the previous 2 years you have always paid in full on time). To get power reconnected they then require you increase your deposit. Sometime up to even KSH 8,000. Being that draconian on payment issues is all good if you match it with your level of service. But with constant power cuts accompanied with constant pleas to "be patient" I wish KPLC would follow their own advice and give people a grace period of say a 2 weeks/month to get payments in.

They have an interesting business model that is never questioned. Power in Kenya is a previledge. First you pay for installation equipment, but they continue to own it (transformers, poles, meters etc) You get no credit even if you are faithful forever You pay for expensive power, especially overpriced diesel fueled power which belongs to unknown people If I say more I may get in trouble..... Kenya Power is one of the very few companies in the world with very special circumstances, where demand exceeds supply but the company can not just perform. It was also the same case with the now defunct Kenya Posts & Telecommunications Company before the liberalization of the telecommunications sector. Maybe all we need is for the energy sector to be liberated and we can have more players in the power distribution business and consumers able to choose to buy cheap power or green power as it happens in may developed countries. That's all said, Kenya Power give 14 days grace period after you bill becomes due for you to pay.

if only electricity could be transmitted wireless? On Thu, Aug 5, 2010 at 1:00 PM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:
