What is it that you are doing when it starts gobbling up memory? Does it trigger when you open an explorer window? If so disable thumbnails view in windows explorer and see whether the issue stops. Does it happen when you fire up IE? ...err.. no comment. Nway If you are sure there is no infection on your system then it was probably caused by something you installed that's not playing nice with the OS or even it could be a bad a windows update. Do a system restore to a last known point when things were fine and then disable windows update and see if the problem goes away and you will have a hint at where the source of the problem is.
