iPhones are downgraded mostly to unlock. You see, with each new iOS, Apple also updates the baseband (like the phones modem) to higher version which is not unlockable with the available tools. So you have to downgrade to a lower version of baseband which is unlockable. Luckily for iPhone 3G and older 3GS, you can always install the iPad 1 Baseband (0.6.15) which is unlockable with common tools. Although this affects GPS sometimes.

Okech the way I know u I thought u were up to something cheeky/sinister with u'r iPhone... Asking about u'r old 3G iPhone 3G saa zile u should be updating us on the mythical "5G"..lol.. Anyway.. Juzi had a knack of time upgrading + jailbreaking & unlocking my 3GS to iOS 5.0.1 it bila using the power button and home button.. never knew it was possible till I see it 4 myself.. But totally cracked it.. will share notes on that when we meet. 4S inafika when?
