Hallo Skunks, Equitybank has not yet issued the thin SIM. Though we should expect them anytime before and hopefully closure of year. Equity bank could not proceed to pre-order the thin SIM when their was some issues pending determination by some govt arm's. As we maybe aware Equity bank was last month given the go ahead to roll out the thin SIM card for a period of one year within which the same will act as a pilot period. As we wait for the thin SIM card Equity has been issuing to her customers with active accounts with the normal SIM card.The prefix is "0763" and the network name is known as "Equitell".Iam a holder of the Equitell line. Walk to any Equity bank branch and you will be issued for free. Consider opening an account with Equity bank to have the chance to get for yourself the SIM card for free. Remember the normal SIM card is only being issued for a temporary period awaiting the thin SIM. Another key point. You have the chance to retain the numbers of your current line but replace the prefix with Equitell's prefix. Hellos. Equity have gotten every approval for Thin SIM pilot roll-out; CAK (CCK), CBK, add Presidential if it matters. You can ignore the court cases and all, they are side-shows. I spent part of Friday at Equity registering for the Equitel service and linking it to some account I have there. They are currently issuing normal SIM cards and not Thin SIMs. My take is that they are managing customer expectations; they advertised a technology that they were not ready with. Meanwhile I have to shift SIM cards to access Equitel services. Will not mind if it ends up being cheaper than the hundreds I keep giving Queen Bee to send money. Mugo. So the Equity's Thin Sim is being launched today according to Daily Nation { http://goo.gl/Kvv6Ff}. Question is, will it stand the test of time given the fact that probably only Equity Bank account holders will get the Thin Sim. Will this have any effect on MPESA. I was fortunate today to be at the Equitel launch today and there were several interesting facts that came out: 1. The thin sim will encrypt data to and fro making it secure, so that Safaricom bickering of insecurity has been laid to rest. 2. The equitel will on ride on a float system as money will be directly transacted from the bank, unlike Safaricom making money out of peoples money(withholding float). 3. The equitel model further will allow direct transfer of money from your phone to any line. Deposit will be free for equity however Equity could not guarantee the same for other banks. 4. Equitel have worked on a credit aggregation based on credit worthiness of the bank account holders therefore qualifying for a loan will not depend on mobile cash usage(as what safcom does) but rather from your banking credit worthiness. Hi, I think this will work very well for anyone not wanting to spend a ton of cash on transaction fees. Safaricom’s MPESA needs that competition and if it means I can get a sim card that allows me to send 10k or 20k and charge me 25/- only, then I will get that simcard. I think EQUITY is best positioned to dent MPESA dominance, even if they only get 10% market share, it will be a huge win for EQUITEL. Regards Muga. My only problem will be if they insist of having an account with them for you to get the Thin Sim.Otherwise, they should use the model Safcom used with the Mshwari i.e you don't have an account with CBA but as soon as you register with Mshwari, then the CBA account is logically created for you. I will be ready to give it a try if indeed I can send money to an MPESA user at a lower fee.MPESA transaction fees are a burden. I spent part of Friday at Equity registering for the Equitel service and linking it to some account I have there. They are currently issuing normal SIM cards and not Thin SIMs.

I choose to look at it from Equity's perspective. It's not about competing with Safcom, but rather solving their own issues.Their main objectives are to : 1. Retain as much money as possible in-house. (transfers between Equity Bank customers is just an entry in their books, no money actually leaves the bank, thereby growing the heap available for onward lending - their core business!). 2. De-congest their banking halls. The solution complements what their agency banking network does. It goes a notch higher by allowing deposits from into other non-equity bank accounts. 3. Lower their operational costs. As with any other automation drive, the solution ideally seeks to enhance efficiency and lower operation costs. All the other things will come as added benefits either to equity or to the consumers. Equity is simply exploring ways of packaging the solution for wider acceptance, read '*wide agency network'*, *'no float issues*', *'cheaper transaction charges', 'accessible loans' e.t.c.* Theoretically, should other markets across the region evolve in the same manner as has Kenya, equity will leverage on it's Bharti Airtel links to replicate the same move.
