I am reliably told there were some panic withdrawals and CBK is supposedly monitoring. Its just a gimmick to reduce withdrawals, probably. Anyway, thats their problem. Peter

Either Mpesa is now on release 579 (judging from the number of maintenance/upgrades they do) or they have a serious downtime/maintenance planning issue On Fri, Mar 1, 2013 at 3:38 PM, Peter Osotsi <peter.osotsi@gmail.com> wrote:

If everyone withdrew the money, amount of deposits held by CBA would fall sharply. Would we even have enough float to cover all withdrawals?

How does CBA come into the picture on M-PESA? On M-Shwari, yes, I can reluctantly understand

@Tony, It is a belief that your MPESA account is a virtual account at CBA. M-Shwari is now more of a face to something that has always been at the back. If you think about it this way, when you have deposited funds on you're MPESA does it fall under a blanket account somewhere? worth = 2 cents Have a good evening. @Tony.. Of course the "Central bank Panic" allegation is very far from the truth.. On Fri, Mar 1, 2013 at 5:34 PM, Brian L <lusiola@gmail.com> wrote:

CBA holds a trust account for M-Pesa.

I don't get it. M-PESA is not a banking concept centered on lending & borrowing (even when you factor in the M-Shwari product). It is simply a handy container where folks keep their cash. If everyone were to withdraw their cash, the net effect would be a sharp increase in Safaricom Revenues arising from the transaction charges. At no time would the withdrawals exceed the deposits.
