I believe the applicant is serious... but just ignorant. I guess the onus is on our local tertiary institutions to train their students on these matters, although they should also take the initiative to learn by themselves how to go about drafting such letters. I believe that if you are an IT personality that yopu should at least know how to use google... that includes the use of google to look for template application letters. Being in an "ignorant" IT person is not a plus... You dont even need to know how to draft a letter just google it!! It shows alot when one calls themselves a techie or even IT person and they cant do a simple thing as that!! me thots!! On Mon, Jun 28, 2010 at 11:26 AM, Simon Mbuthia <simon.mbuthia@gmail.com>wrote:

I am really offended by the criticism on the Nairobits Student being an ex graduate myself. You have no idea. No idea at all what Nairobits does and the lives that have been impacted. -- Regards Martin

I love the work Nairobit does, sincerely, but this issue of not writing proper cover letters applies to many, many other youth regardless of background. We recently decided to bring on some interns and were shocked with how unprofessional their applications were. As a matter of fact, we will be teaching it as a short course so after their internships they will have better chances to get hired. To those young people who are looking for employment, cover letter writing isnt difficult. It is your first impression on how you sell yourself. There are many resources available on the web for reference. Best, Crystal On Mon, Jun 28, 2010 at 12:15 PM, Kariuki Martin <martinkariuki7@gmail.com>wrote:

Matter of fact. Take me off this List.

Here are a few resources: http://www.google.com/images?q=sample+cover+letters&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla... http://www.bestcoverletters.com/ http://jobsearch.about.com/od/coverlettersamples/a/coverlettsample.htm It is very simple to find samples and advice by using Google. Just type sample cover letters. Cover letters are important for any industry. It helps someone to decide whether or not to look at you CV or schedule an appointment with you. A good cover letter explains why you want to work with or for a particular organization and why you are uniquely suited for the position. I know techies often have a distaste for such verbosity, but in order to get taken seriously, it is often required. On Mon, Jun 28, 2010 at 12:27 PM, Ruth Were <nafuna@gmail.com> wrote:

I agree, we should also appreciate the fact that we never got chased by a mob before or got shot at by the police. We should also appreciate that we never had to hustle for food while aged 10. Let's also appreciate having toilets, parents, clothes. You know. let's appreciate that! After appreciating all that, then we should appreciate "starndards" that are man made.

@kariuki I have heard of nairobits and the work they do is exemplary but writing a nice cover letter is important because the people hiring are more often than not not charitable and into business so training in comm skills would do good for the graduants. @Kariuki
Your English is up to par, yet you are a graduate of the same institution. How come?

@ Kariuki Martin, Wouldn't asking Nairobits to incorporate a CV/application letter writing into their programme be a better response? It will help them achieve their goals of giving the people they work with an opportunity to actualise their potential. Do not run away from this because not every employer knows about Nairobits and not all are on this list. Watchman's reaction is the typical reaction such a CV would generate. You have the link to Nairobits. Make it happen. On Mon, Jun 28, 2010 at 11:21 AM, Charles Negera <cnegera@gmail.com> wrote:

I already said i'm apologetic about my ignorance, and i had as Pithon said been more general about the letter. @Kariuki Martin. With respect to the position you currently maintain, had it not been for the "Nairobits" in the letter, would you, as an individual gone ahead with looking at the letter in it's stance without any bias? and i mean this with a professional outlook on applications. I did not know about Nairobits exemplary work, and i was not aware. With respect to the *mac* purchase. I'm not going to be a business person here. and i haven't been before. I'm sorry i hurt your feelings about the mac. It is a good machine. There's other retailers you can pick it from too, i'd be happy to share their location with you if you're that upset with me. watchman On 6/28/10 1:14 PM, pithon kamau wrote:

Mr Kariuki, you are holding grudges for nothing .... I believe everyone has a point Cover letter and CV writting needs to change regardless of your background, Maybe Nairobits should introduce that in their curriculum, its true they are doing a great job and if they do teach Resume writing and stuff like that then its that particular individual that is not professional ... I will give an example one day four of us applied the same job in Safcom so we did our CVs and forwarded them to the HR. Out of the four of us only I was called for the interview. We later reviewed with my friends why they never got the call and the answer was the cove letter and the CV, mind you we had the same qualifications and years of experience ... @Kariuki, *emancipate your mind from your past. *Whatever background you come from is not an excuse for being sloppy. The world is so competitive that if you do not stand out from the initial contact you will never ever get a chance.

@Watchman...Why would you apologize? We just celebrated 47 years of independence and we are still fighting ignorance, at this age of Bing, Google, Ask, etc etc. While in college I was told that the teacher gives you 20%, 80% is up to you to lookup, ask, reseach etc etc. Coming from a poor or rich background and a graduate student from Nairobits, isn't an excuse to write such an "Introduction Letter". The student should have at least asked what it entails to get a job and equip himself with the necessary tools to make sure that he at least writes a good "Introduction Letter". To write a cover letter (Introduction Letter) like it was sent via SMS is....aaahhhhhhg!

By the way did you know one of the main challenges is being invited for the interview ... if you cant impress the employer to be at that point how are you going to prove to them you are skilled enough even if you are the best if you don't even get the interview ?? No need to apologise here. Look at it this way, there is another person, with the same qualification as the so called Nairobist but who goes the extra mile to research on how to write a presentable cover letter. He/she will definitely get the job over you, Nairobist. I mean, lets be real. How can you ask for a job, in *this* market as if unaitisha nare? Martin, your achievements are well worthy of note but I think now you are just wallowing in self pity. Not very endearing! I am very involved with Nairobits and have seen the place grow since 2000 and even with the disadvantaged background that you or the Nairobits community may have experienced, you should not expect special treatment because of that. I know very many graduates of Nairobits that have excelled based on their skill and have grown in the industry as well, some more refined than others obviously but good grooming both in dress and manner is always a plus. As a business person my staff is my image to the world, how then shall I have a great designer that can hardly spell or communicate in English. How shall they take a brief and or communicate a concept to a customer? The point I hope am making is that it's one thing to come from a disadvantaged background and it's another to strive for excellence. I can tell you here and now, I cannot employ a guy simply because he is disadvantaged, (that falls under philanthropy) But I can assist a disadvantaged individual gain access to opportunity. The selection of that individual that knocks at my door (Amongst the 300+ others looking for similar opportunity ) will largely be determined by what 1st impression I get of them.... That's just life So finally, rather than hold grudges and try to justify mediocrity and self pity, may I encourage you to take note of the challenges you and your fellow graduates from Nairobits encounter in real life and be a mentor to them. I can tell from your eloquence that you are indeed not at the same level as the said applicant Kind regards, Paul From: skunkworks-bounces@lists.my.co.ke [mailto:skunkworks-bounces@lists.my.co.ke] On Behalf Of Kariuki Martin Sent: Monday, June 28, 2010 1:10 PM To: Skunkworks Mailing List Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Application letter My mistake, gone to far. Hi Isaac and Martin What Paul is totally true , you cannot go to the job market and use your background as means to get jobs , instead sell your skills and make sure you give the best , i know people who have come from worse places and have beaten the odds , and if you met them back then you wont have guessed there situations they had the best CV , well presented themselves etc ...so if you go round throwing your background as an excuse honestly your not helping your self My thoughts ! @Martin: I think the initiator of this thread already apologized for his initial assumption when he realized why some things might have been overlooked in the email... Please try not to take it personally but let us all take this to emphasize how indeed a cover letter serves to give a first impression of us regardless of how skilled we may be... And we have to admit that in any organization (which may not be aware of Nairobit's work) would have reacted the same way upon receiving the same application. So let take this positively - I believe that since you have a relationship with Nairobit, you should approach them and encourage them to introduce some form of training to their students on writing applications/presentations and presenting themselves in general. To those young people who are looking for employment, cover letter writing isnt difficult. It is your first impression on how you sell yourself. There are many resources available on the web for reference.

I believe the applicant is serious... but just ignorant. I guess the onus is on our local tertiary institutions to train their students on these matters, although they should also take the initiative to learn by themselves how to go about drafting such letters.
My brief thoughts on this. 1. Nairobits is doing fantastic work. 2. Simon - you meant primary not tertiary right? Formal letter writing is a skill that should be taught in primary school not at tertiary level. Perhaps I am displaying my age here but I remember having to demonstrate the ability to write a formal letter as part of the internal ENTRANCE tests to secondary school. At the very least by the first year of high school you should know the format and structure of a formal letter. 3. Many people on this list work to raise standards in our country. One reason I find Skunkworks valuable is because it is full of patriots of one sort or the other. To assume that we demand certain standards because we do not understand the challenges many Kenyans go through every day is ridiculous and petty. It is because we know the challenges AND we know what the marketplace and indeed what LIFE will demand that we are determined to raise the standards across the board. Asking us to lower standards because of this or that is doing a disservice not only to those looking to employ but also to those who are seeking employment. 4. You need to know how to communicate effectively to get ahead and to seize the opportunities that come your way in life. You can rant all you want, you can request to be removed from any number of email lists, you can assume that people do not understand where you are coming from or what challenges you face but at the end of day you need to be able to communicate effectively. Formal writing is a skill that is essential not only in getting a job, but staying in a job. Not only in starting a company but growing the company. 5. As Crystal says, this is growing problem across many sectors of society. Remember a good covering letter and well formatted and presented CV used to be the STARTING point of a successful application. Now days these are slowly becoming the determining factor of an application. We think "well at least this guy can write a letter". Remember not even 10 years ago when we would be told what font, what font size, what size margins, what length an application should be submitted in? Forget that we did not even have computers with word processors at home - but we found a way to get to a machine with a word processor and submitted the applications to the exact specifications. Most of these applications were unsuccessful but hey you kept pressing on. So we are NOT asking these applicants to do anything we did not do ourselves. @Daudi. I agree 100% with your points I can't say i've had it the roughest. Or even state that i've had a bad life. I may not even know what that means or is about. In fact just day before yesterday i was sharing words with a friend ( also on this list ) who explained to me that a certain CEO emerged from Kibera. Kinda made me feel like i've amounted to nothing. However, what i will share is a brief encounter of my life so that i don't get judged again regarding my comment about the internship application. My family is not and has never been of anything higher than lower class. And i state this quite clearly. We had always been "without" certain things but never felt the pinch. My parents when i was younger had saved up a sum of money over ten years and *luckily*, a corrupt conman found out about this little stash of money that was lying in the bank from somewhere, eventually swindling my parents of it. A small property that once belonged to my family ( and i do mean small ) handed down from one generation as a legacy ( per-se ) was grabbed by undisclosed persons. And thus began a chapter in my story i'd like to call life. It wasn't easy for my parents to conceal these truths from my brother any myself when we were younger but they did a damned good job of it. In order to keep our minds occupied and away from the constant battering of what they had to go through, ( this is my perspective ) my parents enrolled both myself and my brother to the Aga Khan Scouts. I never understood why he always asked for a subsidy on the cost our of camping or trips until i was able to understand the situation. When i came of age, i took up a course at Aptech computer college and this not being my first choice , i went ahead and studied Web Application Dev't. After the course, i tool up an an apartment i rented @ Ksh 16,000. Got a job which paid me 10,000. and obviously had other overheads such as electricity, water and food plus i started a course in New Media which spanned 2 Years. Needless to say, it wasn't easy coming up with the money. Food at times was more a privilege over a necessity. What i have done to survive, i hope no one has to. And i say this knowing full well that i haven't had it as bad as a lot of people i know. I've worked with all sorts of individuals, some good, some not so good. I've worked for what i'd like to believe are the best of Employers and quite frankly, some of the Worst i can think of. My story is long, and i'm writing about it too. It's been 10 years since and i'm glad to say i've gotten as far as i have, it's been a very long walk but there's been a good shepherd beside be all through. ( i'm a believer ) @ Kariuki Martin. Please don't judge someone because you assumed things came easy to them or because they said something that offended you. What i did was surely not the best way of going around things, but to say that i'd be doing him a favor by hiring him is a lie. If he doesn't pick his socks up and get himself better written skills, it's not a walk in the park out there. take note of this : *Bill Gates: * *If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure. If you mess up,it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.* * Life is not divided into semesters.
Perhaps Rahim can share with us the hoops he had to jump through to become an official Apple Reseller.

Watchman, I know nairobits and there history from the way i understand is rehabilitating street kids to become professional graphic designers which i can challenge everyone to try them. This means that they only learn basic education and concentrate on the work that they are trained for which to me makes sense because i care less if my graphic designer is excellent at his work but cannot even construct a sentence in english but atleast we can communicate. As a matter of fact they are really making an impact to the less privileged youths and my advice is .....JUST TRY THEM! and you will forget if english is a requirement to be a graphic designer.
