Exchange Database Recovery

I need to recover data from an Exchnage Database (.edb) which has become too large to successfuly restore from back. So my idea is to recover the mailboxes separately and have them mounted on the user's computers as archives. The database is exteremely huge (200 GB), and yah, I know, I should have been wiser but now I need a solution. Anyone with some tools that can just extract this data. In happier days I would have just let the whole thing go but now the Chief of Staff is breathing down my neck.

@Philip, our support enviroment is silly sometimes and unrealistic. You can have management wanting backups and the usual blah blah blah while not doing the policy controls in the first place. How many of those emails for users are legit official mails? I'm sure you know that 90% is the usual forwarding crap that users like to forward or receive each day. Email facilties are out of control when it comes to users because at the end of 2010, that Db size is going to grow even more. Localising it on user machines is going to be even more crazier. Solution : You need to look at the mail traffic headers and start enforcing certain mail policies but you will need management support for this. If they don't listen, please add budgets to get segmenting/load balacing servers to feed their spam needs, including a major upgrade of internet bandwidth to accomodate. Strange that the financial angle wakes management up. Spam costs money! You need some house cleaning.... :-) Me thots.

@Philip -- you mention the backup but you don't mention the current database. What exactly is the problem with the live database? Exchange has a bunch of recovery tools. Depending on your issue they may be able to save your bacon. What exact issue is Exchange giving with the live database? And BTW which version of Exchange? Hmm.. if you cannot find the relevant information from Google search, then you may need to get an Exchange expert to do this for you. I know a few, and I believe you too do know some. You did not say what you have tried and the error you have encountered, so you've left a lot of assumptions flying... I googled for "Exchange Server Database Recovery Procedure' and what I've seen is scaring me off my seat already, but maybe you get a clue.. I can bet this list doesn't have any Exchange experts, but maybe Conrad is...

@Aki, I think just like all the organization, the legit traffic on corporate networks is like zero, most of the traffic just feeds the user's internet shopping, mailing, Facebook needs. And I think enforcing legit traffic is just so hard, not just for emails but also for internet traffic. Anyone who has worked in IT knows how hard it is to enforce rules, and I don't think it has anything to do with impunity in Kenya, it is a worldwide problem. People call you Gestapo! when you want to enforce simple website filtering, and complain how their rights and freedom on information is threated. And you know management always sides with the masses, and also the management types and the worst offenders in any case, partly because they mostly have nothing else to do. @Rad! Actually the current database simply got corrupted somehow, I had a backup but the normal Exhange Recovery does not work. So I kinda want to extract the data from the corrupt Exchange Database natively. It is Exchange 2003. @Washington I have tried all the Exchange Recovery on Google and on those MCSE classes of yesteryears but they simply do not work. I am actually beginning to think the Cloud idea of everything being stored somewhere I don;t have to worry is a good idea. But who want to trust their data to the likes of Google (with the Chinese always snooping) and Microsoft (with the Sidekick fiasco).

What is the file system of the drive exchange backs up to? Is it by any chance FAT32? On Thu, Jan 21, 2010 at 11:10 AM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

Then that's one less worry for you. If you backup to a Fat32 drive you'd be surprised that most system backups are silently truncated when they get to 4GB. I'm not btw an exchange expert. @Philip, ati gestapo! lol! I know where you coming from on this...been there years ago, aging process somehow happens faster... Dude fight for bigger and better system, incase the buck stops at you. I know a riot can easily develop.....just that we have an internal mechanism for self de-pressurizing and turning the other cheek...else users and others would be wearing riot protection gear... :-)))))

I've never found anything hard in it when there are clear policies, signed by every employee:-) Once that is in place, everything else is quite easy, but maybe that's just me.

When there are no policies.

Consult with some experts. Get me off list I can drop you two names.

Many years ago I sued to run Lotus Domino Server. How I miss those days. The thing would run for years without ever needing a restarto rmaintenance.

Have forwarded your mail to an Exchange (2000 / 2003 / 2007) Guru. Hii mambo ya Exchange si mchezo. Exch 2007 is even more C++ On Thu, Jan 21, 2010 at 11:10 AM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks Murigi, I was actually thinking of getting some third party applications to do the recovery. Let's wait and see what the Guru has to say. Exchange is trouble. Sent from my iPhone On 21 Jan 2010, at 19:46, Murigi Muraya <mmskunkworks@gmail.com> wrote:
