Well, am against this notion of a few people making "something out of nothing" and majority "making nothing out of something". I have no issue with the technology side. True using crypto technology and blockchain you can trace the history etc, however this does not explain some mysteries. First a few points to ponder 1. Who invented bitcoin? Why is s/he in hiding? If i were the inventor i would proudly be associated with BTC in this case the guy went to hiding...did he know something or is he/she remaining anonymous avoiding legal action from eminent collapse of bitcoin with a few billionaires and majority impoverished? 2. Ok BTC is popular and they claim over 6 million coins blah...blah... have been mined so far. How did this happen? Who are these billionaires who spent enormous computing resources to mine bitcoin while the rest of the world was asleep? 3. Paypal has a disclaimer on bitcoin trade...do they know something? Many governments do not recognize bitcoin and others have even burned it as a legal tender 4. What's backing this currency? Air? Anyway the truth is that some genius came up with some incredible algorithm based on cryptography, released the code, used pseudo-names to hide s/he identity, got his/her cronies and fictitious accounts with millions of these so called coins, sat back and enjoying billions coming his/her way. The answers to your questions are in DIY..building your own BTC mining rig and mining just 1 bitcoin - when you do, share your experience, you'll have found a profound respect for distributed computing and cryptography.. myths aside. Being an inventor certainly doesn't make you liable for how your creation is used.
2. Ok BTC is popular and they claim over 6 million coins blah...blah... have been mined so far. How did this happen? Who are these billionaires who spent enormous computing resources to mine bitcoin while the rest of the world was asleep?
Resources available online show that even the largest and earliest miners of bitcoin aren't making returns on the scale that you claim.

The US Treasury Department and the European Central Bank both recognise bitcoin as a "virtual currency".I don't understand the point being made here.

Not a bad position to take, but for entrepreneurs high risk always means high returns... My genuine assessment for Bitcoin is medium risk at least for 2015... but I am bullish on Crypto-Currency in general its a paradigm shift... Hope to see you all on Monday.... let the debate stew here for now!!! On Wed, Nov 26, 2014 at 3:01 PM, Collins Areba via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Being an inventor certainly doesn't make you liable for how your creation is used.
2. Ok BTC is popular and they claim over 6 million coins blah...blah... have been mined so far. How did this happen? Who are these billionaires who spent enormous computing resources to mine bitcoin while the rest of the world was asleep?
Resources available online show that even the largest and earliest miners of bitcoin aren't making returns on the scale that you claim.
3. Paypal has a disclaimer on bitcoin trade...do they know something? Many governments do not recognize bitcoin and others have even burned it as a legal tender
The US Treasury Department and the European Central Bank both recognise bitcoin as a "virtual currency".I don't understand the point being made here.
4. What's backing this currency? Air?
Physical gold and silver are other examples of currency that isn't backed (non-fiat) as opposed to fiat currency that is backed by government.
Anyway the truth is that some genius came up with some incredible algorithm based on cryptography, released the code, used pseudo-names to hide s/he identity, got his/her cronies and fictitious accounts with millions of these so called coins, sat back and enjoying billions coming his/her way.
What a genius!

Yeah those are most of the concerns I see raised and I would response as follows: 1: Who invented the wheel? We will probably never know! It is not a requirement we know the inventor of something to trust the invented. However I agree when an invention touches money more scrutiny is needed. Like I said previously they already exist technically better crypto-currencies that are either derivatives of Bitcoin or built from the ground up alternative coins. The fact of the matter Bitcoin source code has been open and scrutinized for the past 4 years or so. 2: Venture Capitalists mostly have poured in also a billion dollars into startups building business on the Bitcoin Blockchain. Back in the day you could mine thousands Bitcoins from an old PC. Some people got rich this way, I am sad I am not one of them :-( 3: Bitcoin value is backed by computing power through mining that keeps the network alive, Dollars from Venture Capitalists, Solutions from startups, Trade from businesses and speculation(a.k.a GREED) from Market traders... 4: You can check out Bitcoin Legal status worldwide here Smart countries have adopted a wait and see attitude before issuing any regulation. Like Paypal I would add a disclaimer that Bitcoin like any other technology can fail or be replaced with a better version but that doesn't mean it doesn't have value or isn't a good idea. One that is increasing edging itself towards mainstream adoption. An analogy that I hope will be helpful is email... those who remember one had to use a set of unix commands to send an email back in the day... many times the email didn't reach the receipt many times one would get spammed, impersonated, phished and many people preferred to using Posta until yahoo and gmail came along... Here is a video of myself discussing what Digital Currencies like Bitcoin will mean for Kenya and East Africa. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZEu8yA5sBo <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZEu8yA5sBo> John On Wed, Nov 26, 2014 at 2:07 PM, Paul Roy via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:
Well, am against this notion of a few people making "something out of nothing" and majority "making nothing out of something". I have no issue with the technology side. True using crypto technology and blockchain you can trace the history etc, however this does not explain some mysteries. First a few points to ponder

Paul, you are most welcome to the event, its good if we dissect new technologies in an open and public forum. For now I am interested in why you think Bitcoin is a pyramid scheme... The Blockchain technology of which bitcoin the crypto-currency is based is quite and disruptive allowing for the storage of information in a non-forgable manner. This has wide implications for human society as it allows for the permanent storage of information on a global network(i.e. The Internet). It is true alot of people involved in Bitcoin have been scammed, hacked and lost money to unscrupulous individuals but this happens to millions of us today who use cash, banks, cards, goats and cows as a medium of exchanges. Crypto-Currency of which bitcoin is the first is far safer if the basics are taken care of and this is why we have the meetup! Here is a recent Wired post that delves into the pros and cons of Bitcoin Blockchain Technology http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2014-11/24/bitcoin-myspace-cryptocurrenc...
