64GB Microsoft Surface Pro will only have 23GB usable space...eh?

One would have thought that by now Microsoft would have gotten rid of the bloat in recent Os versions....apparently not... Full story: http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/29/3929110/surface-pro-disk-space-windows-8

I remember a conversation we had some time ago with some blogger friends of mine about the difference between Windows Tablets and Android Tabs is that what they say is internal storage is available fully on Android but on Windows you get a sizeable chunk unusable. Android also has a lot of bloatware/crapware which I think is worse than MS because you can't uninstall it (without rooting your phone). On Feb 2, 2013 8:49 AM, "Martin Gicheru" <martin@techweez.com> wrote:

I do not think concluding that an platform/device that allows you to use only 36% of the 'promised' storage and one that gives you 75% is an equal/same is a fair assessment; suggesting that the later is worse can only be considered absurd. This reminds me of a certain ISP which advertises 8Mbps only for one not to get that :-) On Mon, Feb 4, 2013 at 11:53 AM, Duggan Kimani <mdkimani@gmail.com> wrote:

Unless we are being sarcastic, its perfectly normal for a device with limited storage and restoration capabilities to have an image for restoring the device. Its an enterprise device and if IT people don't find the need for a bootable image that you remove immediately you are done, I can imagine the average user. That image gives way to bigger and potentially bigger storage when you add SD. iOS devices don't have that capability at the moment. That said, unless we are being sarcastic, I find the quality on the list to have deteriorated severely to the level of hawking merchandise and making fun. Im on the list to gain and disseminate knowledge but on a number of times I've had to quarrel on the level of engagement on the list. Lastly, as IT people, whichever platform for distributing knowledge, we are supposed to be impartial and let the masses decide. Ours is implementation. iOS, Android, Windows, Symbian, Ubuntu or whatever mobile OS out there, we are supposed to appreciate the work of our fellows and ensure the masses find the production appealing. Remember giving is better than recieving, let us learn to give the correct knowledge.

@Peter, I don't think is being unreasonable or even sarcastic. For a device that is supposed to have 64GB, I think it is a travesty to only have 23GB usable space. Even with a bulky Windows 8 restore image, pre-installed Office 13, I don't expect all these to take up a whooping 41GB of space. You must accept there is something wrong with this. I don't think even in a normal PC this is the norm. I have Windows 8 installed on one of my laptops, and the entire installation takes up just over 15GB, and this is with a lot of 'Apps' installed. By industry comparison, a 64GB iPad would have 59GB of usable space. The restore image is around 1GB, and this can just be done from the cloud, OTA or just by using iTunes. I think in tablets, space is a premium, there being no easy methods of upgrading storage other than by the slow removable SD cards. So yes, Microsoft could have done better. Whatever they have loaded is taking too much space. if Apple does the same, or even Blackberry or Google you would here the same sentiments. And I think we are not just passive disseminators of information as you allude. On the contrast, users out there look at our opinions and follow it. If we think something is not good, we should just say it instead of listing meaningless features to the common user. So the Surface tablet sucks. And it is not just about the space. They are confusing as well. With the RT 'light' edition and the Pro tablet, those who bought them are finding out the hard way not all Surface tablets are build equal. And that's why Microsoft is having a hard time selling them.

I would comment if I had the surface pro (which av been waiting for and im getting soon), many of us commenting here have not laid our hands on the pro, we are just hearing stories. I would expect the various OSes to have different ways of accessing the file system, security, the apps and so on and that will make the difference in the size of the installation. I don't know how the installation in the pro comes to 41GB, I will have to see it myself. As for iOS devices or android, their installations are always minimal.

Isn't that bloatware mainly consisting of a recovery image which can be moved to external media to free up space if desired? This is the same thing you get when you buy a laptop or desktop (with 500GB+). In short this is necessary to enable you to reinstall the OS on the tablet without connecting it to any external source ----- Original Message ----- | From: "Brian Munyao Longwe" <blongwe@gmail.com> | To: "Skunkworks Forum" <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> | Sent: Sábado, 2 de Febrero 2013 0:11:05 | Subject: [Skunkworks] 64GB Microsoft Surface Pro will only have 23GB | usable space...eh? | One would have thought that by now Microsoft would have gotten rid of | the bloat in recent Os versions....apparently not... | Full story: | http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/29/3929110/surface-pro-disk-space-windows-8 | _______________________________________________ | skunkworks mailing list | skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke | ------------ | List info, subscribe/unsubscribe | http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks | ------------ | Skunkworks Rules | http://my.co.ke/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=94 | ------------ | Other services @ http://my.co.ke
