@Main, here's the thing with these cards. They need type approvals from CCK as communications devices, if I remember correctly, as they terminate into a public network. You can source them directly from Digium ( they have a rep in SA ), pay the shipping costs and have the cards here in a few days. On Fri, Feb 19, 2010 at 3:27 AM, maina <mamwake@yahoo.com> wrote:

Yani you want to tell me there's nobody who stocks/sells them in Kenya.?

@Aki, Am not sure about type approval, since the Digium/Asterisk cards are more IP than analogue. Could equate this with type-approving network cards. I have set up quite a number of them and there's never been a requirement on this. My Two Cents Kiania On Fri, Feb 19, 2010 at 10:02 PM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

Hi @David, adding my thots, corrections welcome. The PTT demarc is the RJ45/RJ11. This zone falls under public networks and is thus regulated to devices that connect to it. I think the reason for type approvals is that devices not hinder or subject public networks to various faults or interference while also meeting lightning/static conditions/telco standards. The E1/Analogue cards fall into this category. I think if anyone is doing these cards commercially, they should look into it, incase they have issues down the road. Rgds. Also consider this point. Panasonic, Siemens, Bell etc telephony devices including all cards are subject to type approvals. Asterisk and cards is a fully functional pabx that works on public pstn networks. And for the clients using these cards, this is where the bad part comes in. Does their equipment/installation comply with type approvals? This exposes risks to the installer/solution provider. On a seperate issue, those that are developers should look into creating a kenyan based solution for Asterisk billing/call management system. Asterisk has a log ( I think asterisk -cvvr ? ) command will provide the call logs, time, number called and duration. Anyone upto setting up a team project while working on this on their own time? I've not touched the raw of asterisk for a long while now, but am urging others who are already in it to sit together with developers and comeup with something. SAS and Billing/Call management will go hand in hand. Rgds.

Hate to pour cold water on this but, why re-invent the wheel? Several projects already exist. BR, S -- Sent from my socks®

@Steve, agreed there are enough to go by. But look at the bigger picture, even more reason why we should do this locally : - Can they be integrated into Asterisk or on the same server? - Functionality : a) Call costings b) Departmental Call barring and management c) Call Reports d) Pre-paid card system and IVR balance checks e) Post paid - Costs. The last time I checked, One Seat license for proper billing/call management was nothing less than USD1000 plus annual support packages for a commercial use ( Asterisk based and also total number of extensions ) and also an issue you are looking at a 5 year support cycle for a client. I also think that as long as client's have money to throw away at existing expensive solutions available and we do not provide them an option for cost effective solutions built locally, unfortunately you are right. :-) On Mon, Feb 22, 2010 at 9:47 AM, Steve Muchai <smuchai@gmail.com> wrote:
