[skunkworks] OT: Dev CV how to get Hired

Dear friends, I believe this list has a broad spectrum of the 'who is who' and those just getting in techwise and of course us who dream of someday meeting some of the techies here or working with them or under them . I write this with humility not scorn or any form of malice. I start with an extract of a CV my client received whilst looking for a Dev [php] in particular ...... CAREER OBJECTIVE To enable the ethical and innovative improvement of software, programs and websites of which I will be able to conduct my own research on information technology and to be innovative so as to archive my goal so that I would be able to satisfy and enrich the users. WORK EXPERIENCE February 2013 to March 2013: Strathmore University I worked at the SBS (Strathmore Business School) arranging And compiling the and arranging documents ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS November 2013 -To date Strathmore University BBIT (bachelor of Businesses Information Technology) 3rd This was all there was on the CV, the rest where sports achievements and A good team of refs. *My Point* If an employer (Not Government) is looking for a dev, the first focus is what has this Dev done that I can admire, what projects has he participated in whether in school or out of school. Your mastery is seen in your works. If in college or just cleared high school, what personal projects have you done or are doing. If currently you are doing 'Nothing' waiting for an opportunity, chances are you are not a developer - These guys have no life, since its mainly devoted to the code- :) By having personal projects that you are pushing while in waiting, shows that you believe in your stuff and an opportunity to be part of a team just enhances your capabilities. *Profile* In your profile, throw in projects that you have done that relate to the 'opportunity'. It is beautiful for the employer (*to be*) to know that you traveled to Moscow and played some great Chess but just after you updated some log system on one of their Lunar Modules. *You are good* The reason I write this is am certain there are great devs here who find it hard to put together a CV. This is why people here hire guys with such a cv as below because they get called for an interview and its here that they wow the bench; Name: ------------------------ Phone: ______________ My profile Garage Mgt system python postgres 2013 Library system python mysql 2013 Aug Mobile Banking app Java, mysql 2012 Currently: Mobile payments Integration Hope to here from you. +1 Gisho, the other thing I throw in is a serious cover letter, one that shows this guy knows what he whats, IMHO this is how I always view a CV, *What can you do / What are you bringing on board,* *Experience?* *What other professional courses / certification do you have,* Education level Hobbies etc Ref The first three, very important On 9 May 2014 13:13, joe mwirigi <joemwirigi@gmail.com> wrote:
