Re: [Skunkworks] iPhone 5S & iPhone 5c

I hate to say it but half the people who are so critical about Apple have an issue with just one this - price. Apple products are premium products and if you can't afford it, it wasn't meant for you so shouting loudest doesn't change that fact! I currently have a hTC one X and I adore it and at the same time look forward to getting the hTC one, but somehow, whenever Apple releases a new phone, I want that too. The hTC One is the best phone in the market right now (according to several reviews - google), but iPhones are still very much admirable, thats why I plan to have both. ./Ok3ch On Wed, Sep 11, 2013 at 10:34 AM, Steve Obbayi <steve@sobbayi.com> wrote:

Apple doesn't really play the specs game. There are a lot of phones with better specs that iPhones, but the iPhones strength comes from the tight integration between software and hardware. In fact, in terms on memory, the iPhone has around 512 MB or 1 GB, and yet it performs better than most other phones with 2 or 4 times the memory. There is no use in comparing specs.
Same as with the camera. The megapixel battle is worthless, as the quality of pictures is determined by other factors such as the sensor. So a 8 MP camera can actually be better than a 42 MP camera.
A lot of features usually found on the newer Android phones are totally unnecessary, ahead of their time or poorly implemented and after the fad, the fade away..
I think the Touch ID is revolutionary. I waste a lot of time typing passwords and passcodes on the iPhone. Now I will just swipe my finger and in a millisecond I am in. Siri is also performing very well on iOS 7, a major improvement and though no refined, this can another feature with a lot of potential.

@Lawi, I don't think I am uninformed. I made my self clear that it is not about features, and I admit the iPhone have lesser than competition. It is about implementation and integration. How many people use features like face unlock or eye scrolling on Android? How well do they work?

I long for the day when on this list a thread about an Apple phone review will be purely a review about the phone (and the event) and not any Android-iOS war. ./Ok3ch On Wed, Sep 11, 2013 at 10:54 AM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

@Musyoki, I don't know how much face unlock is in use. Pattern unlock pretty much serves my purpose. However, it looks like it's doing well enough to make google introduce "silly face unlock<http://www.techradar.com/news/software/forget-face-unlock-google-patents-silly-face-unlock-for-android-devices-1157067>". @Oketch, I agree fully on the review. But I still believe that it's pretty hard to review anything if there is nothing to compare it with. The reality is Apple will try convince us that their phone is better than the competition. Samsung, will try and do the same. And many others. At this point, the market is mature enough that we can safely ignore the basics. We are now reduced to nitpicking because that is the only way to differentiate the products On Wed, Sep 11, 2013 at 10:57 AM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

I was waiting for the Android Fanboys to crawl out of the woodwork and start bashing the new releases. @Martin best phone is very relative. Clearly you are on Samsung's payroll so to tell us the galaxy note whatever is the best is being rather disingenuous. The 64 bit kernel, the improved camera, the fingerprint scanner are on a production device. Not a prototype or concept and this is why the iPhones will be flying off the shelf. Telling me the specs are not impressive is besides the point. Do you buy specs or a reliable product and pleasurable experience? Chips or memories? @okech I concur the problem people have is on price and nothing else. I would personally love an iPhone but my rent and food is kinda more important. For those who can afford, iPhone is at the top and I totally understand why. On Wed, Sep 11, 2013 at 2:46 PM, Kebaya <humphreykebaya@gmail.com> wrote:

Colourful polycarbonate bodies have been copied from Nokia.
Fingerprint scanning has been on PCs for ages, makes you wonder why competitors never thought about porting it.

Hi, I am probably the only one watching in disbelief as this debate is raging on. All the while I have been thinking that choice is a good thing hence iPhone 5c/s, Samsung Galaxy, Note, HTCs, Lumias and the likes. We cannot all love the same thing due to our different preferrences, personalities, cultures and economic backgrounds. That means that there cannot be an "ultimate" handset or tablet computer for everyone. The fact that Apple has released a slightly more affordable phone with several features introduced means that choice and competition are working for the benefit of consumers, no? Martin.

Samsung filed<http://tech2.in.com/news/general/new-patent-confirms-fingerprint-sensor-for-nextgen-samsung-smartphones/874548>it in Jan 2012 (Approved in May 2013).
Sony filed <http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17490629> for the same in Mar 2012.
Unfortunately, it doesn't matter any more. Apple rolled the feature first, any implementations by competitors will be seen as copying

There is the price issue that is waay out of reach for many, on the other side of the mobile planet is something called user-friendly handling of things which IMHO so far iPhone has scored highly, the others are still playing catchup despite having larger screens. Simple to say, apple first get the basics right the so called features come after. If you get your hands on the good "old" iPhone 3G you will be surprised at how good the photos are let alone the handling, typing your SMS or even mails is never a hustle. So, in summary, we can go as far as amour plating the phones but in as long as they don't make your mundane tasks easy you can call it whatever names that tickles your fancy and still the basics are as horrendous.
