orange internet with a phone as a modem, don't try this at home

After all the hullabaloo about how Orange had reduced their internet prices, I borrowed a friends line and got kshs. 150 credit to try their 150 Mb bundle. When I called customer care for instructions, I was told that I have to buy their fancy named modems, dial some funny looking numbers (#123#3#2#1) and use *99***1# or *99****1# depending on which customer care agent I chose to believe. (not the standard *99# used by most operators). In short, if I wanted to use my phone as a modem, I would have to use their kshs. 7 out of bundle rate. So I tried entering the settings in my computer, whose OS comes with pre-set settings for all other networks by the way, but even that proved to be a futile effort. As I figure out what to do with the credit I can't use, I can't help but wonder how hard a firm can make it hard to use their services. So I can't use Yu since their data service is yet to go countrywide while Orange is tied to their fancy named modems. I don't know about Zain (but their modems were still out of stock countrywide last week). You don't need to be an economist to figure out why Saf will make profits in the region of kes 20 billion this year. seems like they are the only ones after small consumers... -- Sent from my mobile device with Regards: Get your free technology e-magazine in pdf format: Tekniaonline: http://bit.ly/tekniaonline-2 A Campus Perspective, Comically wrapped in Satire : http://gramware.blogspot.com

@Dennis, I find the Orange issue a bit strange that you cannot use your handset. You should be able to access their data menu #123#, click on call. Then choose sub-menu ( I think its 4 ) and choose bundle. Once you have purchased the bundle, it is logged to that sim account.

Thanks Aki, that worked. I can surf with number as *99# and APN as bew.orange.co.ke I wonder why 3 different people at their customer care gave me the above information. -- with Regards: Get your free technology e-magazine in pdf format: Tekniaonline: http://bit.ly/tekniaonline-2 A Campus Perspective, Comically wrapped in Satire : http://gramware.blogspot.com

@Dennis
From experience and after several years of practice whenever I encounter new networks and try to dial-up, the:
*99***1# Is the GPRS standard AT dialing that chooses a specific APN, in this case, the first APN on your phone...as per the order of APN list when you run 'Query Modem" on your "Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options" *99***3# Is dialing the 3rd APN etc etc [there are not 4 stars, check on google always when in doubt [?]] When you do *99# - this puts a wildcard and if set, it will usually result to the default subscribed APN for that network. Usually the dialing computer will try all the APNs on ur phone/modem until it hits the right one. w/r Snn

Thanks, Ndung'u and Aki. If we didn't have you guys, I wonder how we would use Orange EDGE? -- with Regards: Get your free technology e-magazine in pdf format: Tekniaonline: http://bit.ly/tekniaonline-2 A Campus Perspective, Comically wrapped in Satire : http://gramware.blogspot.com
