Hi Skunks, I was shopping for a laptop to gift someone who's just joining campus, and came across a shop in accra road selling some cheap laptops whose specs are quite good. I was suspicious of the prices but those guys claim that these are Ex-UK machines hence the price. How legit are these laptops? Regards

some are good, dealt with them. some be careful. On Wed, Feb 11, 2015 at 10:48 AM, Francis Nderitu via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

I recently bought an Ex-UK laptop (500GB HDD, core i5, 4GB Ram) at a shop along Moi Av. for a relatively cheap price and it is working fine. I guess it just depends on the shop but a lot of the ex UK machines function well. Rgds On Wed, Feb 11, 2015 at 10:48 AM, Francis Nderitu via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

The ease with which someone can buy a used laptop without following up on prior ownership is what possibly fuels the demand for stealing them from parked cars. How can one ascertain that a used laptop has been acquired legitimately? On Wed, Feb 11, 2015 at 11:09 AM, Mark Ojuok via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Good question Peter Karunyu. With the current softwares to track machines one could land a jail sentence for a fault he/she could avoid. Regards Alvin Ochola 0722313923 0739313923 On 11 Feb 2015 12:05, "Peter Karunyu via skunkworks" < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

@Francis... My rule is simple, if the price is too low compared to what other shops are offering, there is a catch. Judging by the number of laptops being stolen from people, I'm sure there is a thriving market for them where they are labelled 'Ex-Uk'. I would rather buy a lower specced, new machine from a trusted shop than a high specced one from a questionable shop. This rule applies to all devices by the way. Your call. :) On 11 February 2015 at 10:48, Francis Nderitu via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Most of the so called Ex-UK laptops are refurbs. For some manufacturers, e.g. HP, you can tell if a machine is a refurb by checking the serial no/part no. See http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Other-Notebook-PC-Questions/How-to-tell-if-note... I have bought a good number of HP refurbs and they work extremely well. My checklist is usually simple: a) If the OS is not genuine (Unataka Windows 8? Tutakuwekea. Hata ukitaka Windows 7 tutaweka), I steer clear. Most new laptops come bundled with genuine Windows licenses. Even if I am going to format and install Linux the next day, it's still a mark of legitimacy. If the machine has been broken in, I don't touch. b) Register with HP. The next thing I do is register the laptop with HP. The laptop must be recognised by HP from the serial no. c) As said above, if the rates are way lower than peers/competitors, think twice On Thu, Feb 12, 2015 at 9:54 AM, Mouz via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:
