We must cast a stone and encourage them to cast one back at us.
Well said King'ori, that's the spirit. The attitude of "everyone's doing it so let's not criticize" is just a cop-out, a morally and intellectually lazy excuse to avoid having to act. The sad truth is, "sweatshop" factories have existed for many, many years. Nike and other garment manufacturers got into hot water for it many years ago, and practices improved somewhat. Consumer-electronics manufacturers have so far been immune to such pressures but that is now slowly changing. If you study such movements, you'll see that they made progress when people had attitudes such as King'ori's: "I'll point out your flaws and you point out mine, hopefully we can both improve ourselves in the process". Similarly, the Fair Trade movement (in the West) started as an attempt to buy goods for whom the originators were paid a "fair wage". A few years ago fair-trade coffee was a novelty (and more expensive), now Starbucks (of all places!) sells fair-trade coffee. Fair-trade chocolate, bananas, etc etc are the norm. It won't be long before fair-trade smartphones join the list, and I think we'll all be the better for it. saidi PS And yes, Rad, you should start a fair-wage movement for house-helps. Maybe a labor lawyer can point us to the relevant minimum-wage laws? On Mon, May 31, 2010 at 10:02 AM, King'ori Gitahi <kingorigitahi@ovi.com>wrote:
