Zuku Traffic shaping or restricting torrents

I have just noticed that Zuku seems to be shaping the traffic on their network and severely limiting torrent speeds. Orange Kenya on the other hand leaves an open pipe. Sucks Monkey Balls. -- Regards, Mark Mwangi markmwangi.me.ke

Vuka ! I dont know why a company would be bragging about Fiber, then throttling speeds. I thot Orange with over-the-air interface should be the one complaining about torrents ... On Thu, May 30, 2013 at 3:48 PM, Mark Mwangi <mwangy@gmail.com> wrote:

Skunks - Someone help me. I have called, tweeted, and even FB ZukuOfficial concerning my emails on outlook. When connected on my phone wireless,, safcom modem, airtel all is fine, but on Zuku nothing works. I mean my mails get stuck on outbox and I cant receive email at all. ping and tracert on my domain returns an error. On May 30, 2013 5:19 PM, "ndungu stephen" <ndungustephen@gmail.com> wrote:

I found something interesting the other day. neither of my two phones could access the internet via Zuku wifi. After looking through the Zuku router settings, I found that both had been added to the filtered/blocked list. Basically, they could connect, but do nothing. Now I know for sure I never added them to that list, so how did they get there????? What I'm saying is, check the router configs. You never know........ Brian, It does not make sense how Zuku will login to customers' cpe (provider have over 20k clients - info in public domain) and block/filter devices unless they have nothing else to do. I might be wrong but it doesn't make sense... On Thu, May 30, 2013 at 11:54 PM, Brian Ngure <brian@pixie.co.ke> wrote:

Zuku will tell you "we'll connect on fibre" then give you speeds like a 256 dial up connection from the 90s. When you complain, "oh, the 4/8/etc Mbps is only between you and our office, whoops, didn't we tell you that when you signed up? Our bad :(" On May 30, 2013 3:49 PM, "Mark Mwangi" <mwangy@gmail.com> wrote:

Well to give them credit they did warn me that the speeds advertised were only assured locally so that's not my problem. My issue is that the traffic internationally is discriminated between http and torrent. Other downloads were fineish. On Thursday, May 30, 2013, Brian Ngure wrote:

Don't they do it on the modem ? Ashok

Blocking of torrents can only happen in my opinion at a device with DPI capability, so it most likely happens at their core. On Mon, Jun 3, 2013 at 10:45 AM, <ashok+skunkworks@parliaments.info> wrote:

They dont block it ... they just shape the bandwidth for torrents ...

Shaping would happen at the same DPI function as well. The modem would have no visibility of L7 traffic to effect this shaping. On Mon, Jun 3, 2013 at 2:08 PM, <ashok+skunkworks@parliaments.info> wrote:

They can implement fair use policy on cmts, but this would affect local loop too. On Mon, Jun 3, 2013 at 3:57 PM, Alex Nderitu <nderitualex@gmail.com> wrote:
