Post Analysis : Technology and the referendum

It's a big congratulations to the implementers of the system and technologies. I believe this was suggested to the then ECK in 2007? I began my short journey today to do some post analysis on these : - We have Elections Observation Group : Local Observers - We have NCIC - Covering different aspects - We have PeaceNet - who are these? - We have SODNET - Who are these ? - We have Uwiano ( UDNP funded? ) - We have Ushaidi ( Not sure where they come into the picture, is it an independent ? ) - We have Volunteers in various groups. ( Which body or group funds this and what do they do? ) If you know more, please add to this list. Corrections welcome. -- Rgds, "Skunkworks-KE is a social platform for technologists. It's where we hang out, talk, discuss, help out some poor soul with technology issues and share a drink once in a while. Then we part....and go do our thing "

Also, just learnt that IIEC was giving access to the media from its server database. So that data streaming across the media screens is being pulled off the server real-time? If true, then its excellent development. -- Rgds, "Skunkworks-KE is a social platform for technologists. It's where we hang out, talk, discuss, help out some poor soul with technology issues and share a drink once in a while. Then we part....and go do our thing "

I would be more interested in how the server was actually set up. How were they accessing that data? Excel files? Web services? Some database? I would also be interested to know what they had done to secure that server... On Thu, Aug 5, 2010 at 10:10 AM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

That information can only come from an insider at the IIEC IT Department, or from Larry, if he attended the Media briefing by the IIEC. I am saying that because I am not sure there are folks from that body in this forum, unless they are in "passive" mode. Talking about which, I wonder if the system was by Kenyans for Kenyan, and how comes the several developers we have in skunkworks never knew about it. Which makes me think, there are Kenyans out there somewhere, besides skunkworks, who need to be considered for the Safaricom Innovation Board too:-) I am just thinking aloud! How do we get/attract majority of Kenyans in the ICT industry into skunkworks? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

But can you imagine how many people are on this forum? And what %age of the ICT Pros in KE it represents? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

ill reiterate what my friend david and I were talking about and concluded. IIEC has done great, now we know the most powerful position in the new Kenya (DB admin / webmaster of IIEC).
From this point forward though, what IIEC needs is to avail data from their database in an xml feed, and give anyone interested in a live feed an opportunity to recieve this realtime.
that way every skunk can design their own presentation and enjoy the results in their own way. what do you guys think? On Thu, Aug 5, 2010 at 11:20 AM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:

Agreed. This data has to be made publicly available. Please note releasing it to the media is not the same as making it publicly available. I am especially interested in how the data was being sent to and received by the server (the new Blackberries?). From the chairman's statement yesterday it was almost like he was saying that once the results are sent from the constituencies to the servers the IIEC can not interfere with them which would mean that the devices "talk" directly to the servers. Secondly, where are these servers? In a ISP? In a government office? Off Shore? At Bomas? -- Pamoja e:daudi.were@gmail.com <e%3Adaudi.were@gmail.com> skype: d.were

That "every skunk can design their own" beats the hell out of me! @wash im just saying, once the xml feed is in place, its all fair game. some may want charts, some bars, and some may want a gazillion images of the opponents that gets shot and screams to death for every vote lost or won. thats what i meant, not anything functional :-) On Thu, Aug 5, 2010 at 1:52 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

@Wash, I finally resolved the skunksworks KE gene problem. If you check out my new signature, it says what we are, IMHO. We need a Club House in future that can help spread the word. -- Rgds, "Skunkworks-KE is a social platform for technologists. Theoretically, YES needs 300,000 more votes to win this ( 70% ) of total voters ( 12 M ) watchman On 8/5/10 10:51 AM, Eva Kimathi wrote:
