This maybe a liitle OT, but I certainly hope not. After watching the TED speech posted by D Kiania Early this week. I have spent the whole week inspired. For those who might not have had time to read or watch the speech it was about innovation. He has been nominated for inventing or should I say innovating "a way for rural families in Kenya to replace smoky kerosene and firelight with solar powered lanterns." I don't know the guy personally nor have been directly affected by his work but IMHO its a noble idea put to work. I have already cast my vote. Have a pleasant weekend. Hello my good people, I am starting to wonder whether I am being swindled. I am connected to safcom internet which they hyped to be the best. Thing is, their speeds are so disappointing. I am having way better connections on safcom bundles which leads me to believe that the office internet connections are being routed to satellite gateways coz they are soooooo slow:-(. Especially when I ping to international hosted websites. Right now I am on bamba net in the office coz the lan connection is unbearable. Si hii ni kurudishwa nyuma in this fiberlink age? Again, I cant help but wonder whether I am being swindled "SAFCON Style". What do you think? Is it a common problem?

Philip, Our capacity is 256 both up and down and the building has a fiber station where we source from. At times the speeds are generous say two to four days a month(like someone forgot to check the traffic), and we get up to 600-800kbps(oh happy days). Then, back to the bad days of 9-18-28kbps max.

I suspect you link may be contented (shared) to some ratio; usually 1:8 or 1:10 or 1:20. Depending on the usage of the other users (contentees) on the link, speeds can tend to jump up and down from time to time. If it is not a contented link, then you need to have a chat with Safaricom. I have used their service on Fixed data and they are quite good.
Thanks for the insight, Were you using the same bandwidth packages ie 256kbps on the fixed data or were you on a higher package? And then again why is it that the local loops eg. local pings return far much better response,78-80ms -+ than the pings to like yahoo or google which are 3000-4000ms +.
