It's definitely possible to run your own though I don't think it will coexist peacefully with other services on an existing box (port 53,80,443). Just spin up a fresh one, https://github.com/trick77/tunlr-style-dns-unblocking has a solution already figured out. I have VPS on rackspace both in the UK and in the US, I have been testing Blockless and unblock-me. How does it work? Is it a matter of configuring the DNS server? Can it be done on a linux box stateside so I enjoy the same benefits from my box?
