There was a very good article on this in the Economist on the 4th of August. I believe the US may be acting out of fear of being edged out of the Telcom space by the Chinese Telcoms Huawei and ZTE. Lenovo, the company that bought out IBM's personal computing business and has kept the ThinkPad brand alive is also facing a lot of challenges in the US by being blocked from major US Government contracts. i believe this has nothing to do with security as it has to do with Envy. China is a growing market while the US is shrinking. I think in the end, the US market will be deemed too small and the Chinese companies will suffer no long-term damage to their business. They have entrenched themselves in Africa and Asia and this is where the growth is in the next 20 years. In all fariness, these Chinese companies have shaken the market where US and European companies sued to charge so much for network gear. I believe the growth we have seen in Kenya and Africa is in part due to affordable networking gear from China. Earlier networks were so expensive because of the cost of equipment from companiens like Siemenes (now NokiaSiemensNetwork), Alcatel (now AlcatelLucent) and Ericsson. Now these companies have been forced to lower their prices because of competition. I know you will argue that quality and support do not match the US and European companies. But I guess in the end it will be balance of cost/support/quality. And clearly the Chinese have won. I
China is already on its way to victory. Because despite being blocked all the time, they already are so huge as to be noticed by everyone. They have market share and their products are good and loved by people. Where is my rumble headed to? US is practicing Machiavelli tactics. They are trying to destabilize a strong enemy. In my opinion, anyone who thinks the U.S/Australia are being unfair has no idea what the terms 'National Security' mean! The next war(s), unlike the previous ones, will be fought on the cyber space. So far we have seen Stuxnet, Duqu and the new one that came up recently(forgetting the name). It's also very clear that the two world super-powers will be The U.S and(vs.) China. The war is just getting started and yet everything is getting 'technologised' quicker than I can say M-O-S-E-S! Connected cars, houses, military installations, electricity grids, water supply systems, e.t.c! In the very near future we are going to see headlines such as 'Country X Hacks into Country Y's Water Supply System Using a Backdoor in the Supply System and Shuts it down for 48 Hours'! That said, if you were the U.S, would you allow your enemies to plant their weapons in your country while you watch and defend 'fair trade'? Only a short-sighted person would do that! The Chinese, while so sophisticated as to insert snooping software on their equipment, lack sophistication to insert such in devices manufactured in China, like the iPhone. It is also proved that network traffic and communications from the US and to the US stays within US, and therefore nowhere else in the world does it have to pass through devices manufactured in China. Anyway, the Chinese have been keeping facebook and Twitter out of China for similar reasons. It's a fair game.
