Re: [Skunkworks] How do you find your nearest 3G Base Station.

As expected with such apps, 3g support is limited. Works very well with 2 ./bernard sent from my android device. On May 29, 2011 11:49 AM, "Vincent Wayodi" <wayodi@gmail.com> wrote: Thanks Amanya.. @ Vincent I am curious - what exactly does the program show ? Does it show cell-ids ,, location or proximity ? I am yet to try installing the program on Android as I do not have an Android presently.

Hello Ndungu OpenSignalMaps collects objective signal & tower location data e.g. location, network type and signal strength around you. The Android app collects the data around you and uploads to their servers. http://opensignalmaps.com The location of the towers around you are shown on Google maps on your phone, ie ( Network Name, type of network, Signal Strength from specific tower, and the CID . There is also a feature where you can test actual data speeds to your nearest tower. Thanks vincent

Very useful app. Just did a speed test : Ping - 655ms Download - 1330kbps Upload - 276kbps Impressive ! ./bernard sent from my android device. On May 29, 2011 2:56 PM, "Vincent Wayodi" <wayodi@gmail.com> wrote:

Very useful indeed. I have tested Airtel and Safaricom . "Average of 3 tests shown below" . Yet to test Orange. I know there are many more factors to consider but hopefully this should give me a rough idea of what quality of service to expect. Airtel ping 2644ms Download 88kbps Upload 84 kbps Safaricom ping 466 Download 214kbps Upload 298 kbps

The safcom one looks like edge stats. ./bernard sent from my android device. On May 29, 2011 4:12 PM, "Vincent Wayodi" <wayodi@gmail.com> wrote:

This is quite useful data; I have from time to time been quite disappointed with some of the EDGE/3G+/3G services especially if some of your paycheck depends on internet reliance. Most of our mobile operator based internet is quite intermittent, you get flashes of good performance,, then horrible perfomance (down to 0kbps) for most of the time. If such info is published; for all the Mobile Operators; then I believe they would pull up their socks to *optimize* the quality of internet service - after we (the consumers) have taken our time and budget to buy them modems and them bundles... For example... If I get such cell-info for my home area, and I see that e.g Airtel/Zain internet is as crappy as shown, then I have no reason to purchase their bundles/modems. And who knows,, Mabbe Alex Gakuru<http://www.balancingact-africa.com/news/en/issue-no-556/telecoms/kenya-consumers-sue/en>and crew can get more consumer evidence to CCK and continue to push or sue for bad service!

Ndungu , you can get a good Android phone at Orange Shops for 12,500. You don't need to buy a costly one just for running the apps

Interesting. I think it would be nice to map this locally. On 5/30/11, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:
