This guys are normally in Citi hoppa buses. They work very closely with the conductors. Double m and KBS buses know them and are very wary on let them board their buses. According to my research this are the guys who do carjackings and other violent crimes at night but are pick pockets during the day. Take note of their MO (mode of operation) below: 1. They are in a group of 4 or 5. 2. They are all middle aged men with bloodshot eyes. 3. They are usually dressed in casual clothes,( jeans, t-shirt, casuals shirts and sweat shirts) 4. They stake out a victim who is not wary of his/her surroundings, especially people on a call, or deep in conversation with a seatmate or just absent minded. 5. They fein having dropped a coin or keys. In all they conduct a surgical operation and have strength in numbers to back each other up in case of a confrontation. This happens a lot, problem is if you try to help and you are a lone ninja, the gang will very quickly silence you. They are known I believe to the police and the conductors. Some years back, they tried the drop coin on me so that they could snatch my neighbors phone. Told them I cannot see it. so the main guy asked me to get up from my seat so that he can look for his coin. At the time, I had thought it was genuine until the guy refused to get off my seat and asked me to get a seat elsewhere. So I just stood next to him staring at him with 'where are your manners' eyes.
Then a guy 2 seats ahead of me shouted at me, 'Kaa chini huko mbele wewe, utashikwa na kanjo'. 'Wakinishika tutaenda na wewe? I retorted. Wacha kanju wafanye kazi yao na wewe ufanye yako!' I continued. Wait a minute, a 3rd and a 4th guy chipped in asking me to move away and sit somewhere else. Then I noticed a pattern in their eyes red, tired and bluffly stern. Getting back to the main guy, he had started chatting up my seatmate. "Umepata pesa yako?" I asked, genuinely:). Then I realized its a gang and they all boarded at the same time hapo GPO. One of them was trying to establish eye contact with me to issue me a threat.
Meanwhile with all the questioning, every other passenger is quietly minding their business. What if the whole bus is a gang save me and my seatmate? My seatmate was now aware and held everything to himself as I did a ninja-alight. One of the guy coming after me."Tutakumaliza wewe!". So Cynthia pole, but just understand may be guys have had nasty experiences trying to be Ninjas and Zorros and stories are many out there.

The only way we can try to address the situation is only by being vocal about it. I guess it starts by you. You pointing it out while it happens. Over time, I have become extremely paranoid when in town. My motto is; never carry anything I am not willing to lose. So ATM card, ID card and any other important stuff never feature in my pockets unless I am going to need them. I also dont carry a wallet. As for laptops, I only carry it on mondays to the office, and on fridays from the office. And even then, I ensure that Time Machine/Google Drive/Dropbox is fully in sync so that incase I do lose the laptop, its easy to recover after the mourning period. For a phone, I ensure that all my contacts and previous photos are frequently synced. I am sorry to sound so negative, but if you havent encountered these thugs in their various forms, please know that the rules of probability are against you; its a matter of when it will happen, not if. Guys Its an organised cartel , especially on the Double M Buses, plying City center - Community - upper hill - Kenyatta. Unless the police intervene, they know that most of this people plying that route are vulnerable(for the lack of a better word , most of them do not reside in Nairobi, ), KASNEB, TSC, Milimani Court, Lands, and not To mention KNH. This happens a lot, problem is if you try to help and you are a lone ninja, the gang will very quickly silence you. They are known I believe to the police and the conductors. Some years back, they tried the drop coin on me so that they could snatch my neighbors phone. Told them I cannot see it. so the main guy asked me to get up from my seat so that he can look for his coin. At the time, I had thought it was genuine until the guy refused to get off my seat and asked me to get a seat elsewhere. So I just stood next to him staring at him with 'where are your manners' eyes.
Then a guy 2 seats ahead of me shouted at me, 'Kaa chini huko mbele wewe, utashikwa na kanjo'. 'Wakinishika tutaenda na wewe? I retorted. Wacha kanju wafanye kazi yao na wewe ufanye yako!' I continued. Wait a minute, a 3rd and a 4th guy chipped in asking me to move away and sit somewhere else. Then I noticed a pattern in their eyes red, tired and bluffly stern. Getting back to the main guy, he had started chatting up my seatmate. "Umepata pesa yako?" I asked, genuinely:). Then I realized its a gang and they all boarded at the same time hapo GPO. One of them was trying to establish eye contact with me to issue me a threat.
Meanwhile with all the questioning, every other passenger is quietly minding their business. What if the whole bus is a gang save me and my seatmate? Worse still is they use their masculine advantage over the woman and you can find your self stripped literary and of course of your dignity to make sure you will not raise your voice again or alarm. My sister lost her wallet like that. They drop keys, coins, shout warning signs like "karau" for you to look for seat belts so that they can make oyu lose concentration and most of the time they are never armed. they are always in cahoots with the mat drives, conductors and cops. My friend was once threatened for insisting to report the at kilimani. Yes they even offered to take her to the cop station assuring her that they would be out in 30 mins tops. As a campus student 10 years ago i fell prey to one such a gang and since then i learned to be wary and aware of my circumstances. Once In my folly a few years later, I was expecting my First born i went head to head with such a gang on Waiyaki way since i decided i will not change matatus. I was too hungry, tired and hormonal. Turns out they were armed. Thank God for letting them alight half way through the journey without harming us. But once i saw the gun, fake or not, i learned to keep quiet and mind my own business. Sorry Cynthia... I had a similar experience in a modern coast bus but my case was drugging... I only found myself at the Mombasa Hospital Bila laptop.. a friend who was waiting for me at the Mombasa Mordern coast booking told me nilishukishwa na crew kama ni me bleki. Then a guy 2 seats ahead of me shouted at me, 'Kaa chini huko mbele wewe, utashikwa na kanjo'. 'Wakinishika tutaenda na wewe? I retorted. Wacha kanju wafanye kazi yao na wewe ufanye yako!' I continued. Wait a minute, a 3rd and a 4th guy chipped in asking me to move away and sit somewhere else. Then I noticed a pattern in their eyes red, tired and bluffly stern. Getting back to the main guy, he had started chatting up my seatmate. "Umepata pesa yako?" I asked, genuinely:). Then I realized its a gang and they all boarded at the same time hapo GPO. One of them was trying to establish eye contact with me to issue me a threat.
Meanwhile with all the questioning, every other passenger is quietly minding their business. What if the whole bus is a gang save me and my seatmate? My seatmate was now aware and held everything to himself as I did a ninja-alight. One of the guy coming after me."Tutakumaliza wewe!". So Cynthia pole, but just understand may be guys have had nasty experiences trying to be Ninjas and Zorros and stories are many out there.

In certain reported cases especially at GPO and Yaya one of the thugs may have brandished a gun or threatened with physical harm or hurled insults to scare off good Samaritans. Due to the numerous cases being reported, its a good time to create an app that collects data of geographical location of robbery or attempted robbery, matatu pickup stage location, route and license plate number.. this could over a period of time generate data that assist with arrests and offer case study information 2. According to my research this are the guys who do carjackings and other violent crimes at night but are pick pockets during the day.
Take note of their MO (mode of operation) below: 1. They are in a group of 4 or 5. 2. They are all middle aged men with bloodshot eyes. 3. They are usually dressed in casual clothes,( jeans, t-shirt, casuals shirts and sweat shirts) 4. They stake out a victim who is not wary of his/her surroundings, especially people on a call, or deep in conversation with a seatmate or just absent minded. 5. They fein having dropped a coin or keys.

This happens a lot, problem is if you try to help and you are a lone ninja, the gang will very quickly silence you. They are known I believe to the police and the conductors. Some years back, they tried the drop coin on me so that they could snatch my neighbors phone.
