UUNET kenya joins the quote of the day chorus

UUNET joins AK in a chorus becoming irritating ( close to spam ) : " we have doubled the bandwidth while keeping the same prices......" Quote from Daily Nation. (yeah, yeah, yeah. big deal, whatever.......! ) Aki's quote of the day " who told you to double bandwidth at same prices, why not drop the charges by half at the same capacity?" :-)

@Alvin, kenyans like free things and unfortunately cannot get them because of debt burden and all the social/economic ills that are around. You should see how the citizens of a developed country like free things ( like free internet in public places, huge rebates on white and brown goods, autos, furniture etc etc) and enjoy them, despite heavy taxes. :-)

I'd be very surprised of more than a couple of companies actually lowered their costs. The saved costs in bandwidth thanks to the assorted cables coming through is unlikely to be more than the revenue they currently collect from their customers. Hehehe @Alvin. Maybe we should move the Service Provider chorus to the kenya National Theatre and direct a play around it.... Who would like to play the part of CEOs and have deep bass voices to complement? ( just kidding... )

It is a marketing ploy. To keep revenues at original values, let us give consumer more bandwidth instead of charging them half for same bandwidth. The consumer will notice a huge difference (lower latencies and faster speed) and will not opt to downgrade to their original bandwidth. Others will find down grading a hassle and some will not even notice anything changed. Every one is happy, screw the morals. In connection with that, when does safaricom "double our bandwidth" ? What's the lowest practical cost for monthly connection? I guess anything under sh2,000 would not be worth the cost (manhours, etc) in collecting. So instead of charging very low amounts for small connections, it makes more business sense to sell not-so-small bundles, therefore, they double your bandwidth instead of halfing the cost. As much as we'd love to pay less, ISPs are in this for profit. How much profit is another topic. Thats my 2 cents 2009/9/8 Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com>

If the gava was serious about the internet being a strategic investment (like electricity or telephony etc), they would not be leaving consumers at the mercy of business operators. The thing is, its up to the government to recognize that cheap internet will contribute a lot to economic development, and invest properly in it so that they can be in a position to control prices. After all, its public money. But as it seems, we have been left high and dry. If a student in Europe can afford 20 MBps in his house, how come an SME in Kenya cannot afford just 1 MBps? What are the ramifications to our economy? And we wonder why we remain poor? On Wed, Sep 9, 2009 at 10:48 AM, Gichingiri Kuria <gmail@gichingiri.com>wrote:

I second Ikua totally. There govt agencies out there like FCC in US tha t vigourously advocate for fair competition and business practice that only leads to tangible benefits for the consumer.Bashing ISPs for these high costs wil not achieve much if the regulator does not flex its muscles in enforcing tougher policies.

What's the lowest practical cost for monthly connection? I guess anything under sh2,000 would not be worth the cost (manhours, etc) in collecting.
So instead of charging very low amounts for small connections, it makes more business sense to sell not-so-small bundles, therefore, they double your bandwidth instead of halfing the cost.
As much as we'd love to pay less, ISPs are in this for profit. How much profit is another topic.
Thats my 2 cents

and did you hear the news the other day, saf set up a Renewable energy
BTS at a remote corner (it is always a corner according to the media) of the country which supplies a school with power as part of its CSR. gentlemen, whose constituency does this occur in, other than that of the information and communication minister.

you are asking questions only meant to be asked in democratic, free countries with independent Regulators who follow the law..... We have a make believe regulator, you know... loves companies that pay hefty monies to them every year. Not pesky users who pay nothing to them anyway....

Aki's quote of the day " who told you to double bandwidth at same prices, why not drop the charges by half at the same capacity?" :-)
