Toilet seat musings of why Kalahari and Mocality shut down - bit.ly/ul3o5T

So the blogsphere is ablaze with the news of the Naspers backed Kalahari and Mocality shutting some of their Africa operations. Well, my take is very simple.I am sufficiency tech savvy and well educated.I understand and use paperless cash ala credit and debit cards and use Mpesa often.I am an avid movie watcher and read tonnes of stuff on my Ipad. A quick survey at the Nailab {5 peeps seated around a table} revealed that while 4 chaps read ebooks and watch movies {torrent supported} on this pad or that pad and 1 lady is a voracious reader {does a book every three months qualify for voracious??} None had actually bought anything that would have been sold by Kalahari on Kalahari, with the ads on tv and web notwithstanding {and not to mention the prices on Kalahari were more expensive} More here - bit.ly/ul3o5T

Be careful, the shut down is an unsubstantiated rumour and many Naspers Executives are on this list. it would be a good idea to get a confirmation of what is going on first On Tue, Oct 25, 2011 at 11:06 AM, Mbugua Njihia <mbugua@symbiotic.co.ke>wrote:

@ Mbugua, I think that your findings are fairly accurate; a lot of the stuff sold on Mocality are not what a sizable no. of the local population would buy; Massages, Weekend getaways, etc. Also, I find their strategy rather unappealing; they only list one deal on one of the above items. Shy not just list the items on sale, associated prices, deals of the day, and sold out (for future speeds of purchase).... In my experience, Kenyan consumers want to be told how much it costs even before you start exploring the finer details Mugo On Wed, Oct 26, 2011 at 12:05 PM, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com>wrote:

This is the second thread where someone's said.."..the owners are on this list". Why does it matter so much? we're not being harsh, or being rude, and i do recall it being an open discussion that we should speak whilst being observant about other's feelings but i doubt being afraid to air our views was one of the topics of discussion. * W/* On Thu, Oct 27, 2011 at 12:23 PM, m mugo <mugo2of3@gmail.com> wrote:

Am not sure i understand this, you're saying i'm causing paranoia by saying*this list is being watched *? if anyone else feels that my signature is causing you worry. Do let me know right now so that i can do something about it. @./Ok3ch. I have no malice toward anyone here. I believe we have an open forum here and it should be exactly that. I've had finger's pointed at me over the years, as an IT firm, as a support matter and have dealt with it in an open forum, i haven't hidden anything from the list and have no intention of doing so. If there's fear on this list of who's listening in and who's reading, maybe we shouldn't have it on. It is already out there. We have nothing to hide and saying things like "the owners are on list" simply states we've got something to be afraid of. The people saying what they did didn't need to worry. It was a view being aired. Freedom of speech? or are you against such things? This will escalate if we let it. So i will not reply to this matter unless it becomes absolutely necessary. * Open forum = open views*. We should be able to say what we need to without offending others on-list. * W.* On Fri, Oct 28, 2011 at 12:50 AM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

This is the second thread where someone's said.."..the owners are on this list".
Why does it matter so much? we're not being harsh, or being rude, and i do recall it being an open discussion that we should speak whilst being observant about other's feelings but i doubt being afraid to air our views was one of the topics of discussion. * W/*

In my experience, Kenyan consumers want to be told how much it costs even before you start exploring the finer details

Unfounded rumours can have grave consequences for employees, company owners and even YOU if you do business with them or hope to in future. it just helps especially if you are a blogger to do some background fact checking especially with the insiders before making conclusions. Public lists help people shape opinions of you depending on what you do or say However, if you have known and seen my previous posts, im for free speech! -- Sent from my Voice Recognition Watch© -------------------------------------------------------------------- Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us.There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.As we let our own light shine, we consciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
