Mpesa and Safaricom's satisfaction in Revenue

Guyz, Anyone from safaricom on the list? I just noted how almost impossible it is for someone to start MPESA even as a sub-agency in an area where there is totally no MPESA within like 8-10KMs unless he knows someone in the inside! Essentailly if you give a company a lead on prospective Business, they will support you,but on the contrary,I have located several places in Western Kenya where MPESA is just heard on media.I have gone through an Agent to be a sub-agent in the place.I got all the requirements, painting the building ,getting local government permit, cash in my account etc.But Safaricom have ONLY promised since september 2009 to come and check the building(and they are still coming!). Is this corruption or Safaricom does not need such money let alone empowering citizens with surprises, opportunities? This place is a district headquarter!Any safaricom person on the list to shed some light? Rgds

Dont worry - we have all encountered the same thing... I was given flimsy excuses like 'you dont own that business' - even after clearly and expressly stating that the place would be rented upon approval of location. It does also not make sense to spend money to upgrade the place until the place is approved - then you can get fundi to make the place once they give you a date of arrival for premise audit. There are some people [the one who already have, and shall always have] who opened two Mpesa's in the exact same place within city center of Nairobi even after Safaricom had refused and quoted the place as "saturated". [Note that the two businessmen who out bidded us for the same space are millionaires, and we had applied many months before them] There is also the issue of new regulations that shops have to be 3m by 3m - obviously this does not apply to everyone [see attached image] - this mpesa outfit was opened after these rules and regulations. Even the issue of minimum float for application of agency does not apply to everyone either. Besides, I *dont* think the business has much returns any more - they reduced the agent commissions, but still charge the customers the same amounts for transfers and withdrawals - what this means is this :- (1) Safaricom is now getting more money than previously for the transactions that initially used to profit the agents. (2)It also means, that if you have competition then you *need* to get *at least* 40 customers per day to meet make any meaningful profit. In the days Mpesa was newer, agents could comfortably break even in their business by having above 30 customers per day - but not anymore. If you average 40-50 customers per day, you will barely make KSh. 15,000 - take away rent and employee wages - and you are left with ? In conclusion - the process of granting agencies is no longer transparent. Secondly unless you are assured more than 70 customers per day [this means a town outfit with little or no competition] I *dont* think *Mpesa is a viable* business anymore - maybe a small added service to your main business - but its not worth the trouble of getting the agency granted. My thots and analysis. Please contact the regional managers of the areas you want to open the Mpesa (the regions go as per provinces) so that you can hear the exact reasons they have given for not evaluating your shops almost a year later. These numbers can be got from the Mpesa support lines: 0722002134 or 0722002234

Interesting, @ndungu,for me,I spotted the place as potential(no mpesa within 8-10kms),developed the place, painted the premise(5m by 10m)started paying rent, got a permit from the county council in the region, applied for safcom to come and check the place. This is in Western Province. But my friend,to date they have never appeared there, infact I feel it is like I gave them a business secret! Actually after posting this issue on skunkworks I got a response from a couple of guyz in safcom,s mpesa department who asked me to call them so as we may talk.I called one of them(a manager) and we scheduled a meeting and we met.He took my details, asked me to send him pictures of the premise and the application to open an outlet, which I did within a day or 2.After that he never picks my calls 3 weeks down the line. With this I wonder how Kenyans are going to live.I normally say that working in a firm is an opportunity given to you at that time(Someone said this:you never know what tomorrow carries, you might wake up and be told it never rained the previous night,or zap is working harder, so your department has to be closed)so for me give your best.Whenever you have an opportunity to be honoured like safcom, you need to respond also. I am closely watching the space to see who will be given a Go ahead by safcom to start running there. @Barrack I am also hoping to see a new Kenya. But it starts with us Kenyans. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

@Net Net As a point of action, is it possible to follow up with the guys who called you at first? They seem to be decent guys... for starters... It seems however, MPESA was hit with some sad news - the passing of Adnan Adnan, head of Mpesa.... He was a straight guy - he would approve the Mpesa premises, but the guys on the ground would disapprove with flimsy reasons... These same guys would allow an area to be 'saturated' with more connected businessmen after disapproving from smaller unknown types.... So do not be surprised if another merchant pops up in your area with a new shop.... from what I know, I know guys who have between 150 to 200 Mpesa shops and counting, these guys will always get approval, no matter what area they open... My advise, go through these guys, and part with a % commission [?].... These guys can get you a shop running in less than 2 months. Its there, I have seen it - even though they would deny it [ for public image protection ] - they know its happening and I wonder how the insiders stand to gain from these 'many shops' businessmen. Happy hunting !!!
