Accesskenya has issued a profit warning to investors through the Nairobi Stock Exchange that their profit for 2010 will go down by as much as 20%. Teren teren !!!!! Think it's a bad idea to compete with Safaricom in any business segment. I don't know where they'll unlock value from to turn profitable. Well, ISPs, other than Wananchi, dont seem to be learning a lot. Decision not to share infrastructure will haunt them forever...

Dennis, Could you kindly expound on these "lessons learnt" by Wananchi, or are they proprietary for business? Wananchi is not listed in the NSE, and as such I think we should not be talking about them in this regard without expounding. To me, AK is a very reliable Corporate ISP. However, there are times in business when certain decisions end up badly affecting the bottom line. Such decisions are various and could just be as diverse as the market itself. Client perceptions, frustrations, and competition can all change the market patterns and lead to companies not realizing the profits they had anticipated. AK issuing a profit warning can be a result of such, but we should try to find out what led to this, not speculate. I am sure they have a report, which will be given out to shareholders to explain to them why dividend will be lower this time round. IMO, Wananchi getting hold of the license to roll out on KPLC's electricity network is very great. Compare that with the cost of obtaining way leaves and digging up trenches. Secondly, Wananchi also are quite affordable compared to the rest. In fact, as you have seen form the list , this guys are barely meeting demand. As for the rest, they decided not to share infrastructure, such that if ISP A lays fiber to your premise, they lock you down as if you plan to switch to ISP B, they also have to lay fiber . Looks very bright till you look at the cost of trenching and way leaves. Eventually, you lock down a few custiomers paying through the nose. Take the risk and have about 2-3 infrastructure companies for all ISPs, risk your competition sharking your customers, but have a lower capital ost and faster roll out hence new subscribers for all ISPs. Lets wait and see how this plays out. Also note that Telcos are able to cheaply cover customers put off by the prohibitive cost of ISPs, with satisfactory speeds on 3G and other related technologies. If I was a Carpenter ISP, and you were my lady prospective customer....

Who gave you the impression that WOL had exclusive rights to the KPLC fiber infra. Most Tier 1 including JTL and Safcom have the same access. WOL have a more effective PR machine hence the misconception. IMHO AK have been a victim of two heinous crimes :- 1) Being a listed family run business. This has led to below par governance and that's why there were damaging Boardroom battles. 2) Indecision on what services to run onto of the fiber infra to improve service quality and utilization on it. They are in dire need of fresh new aggressive management who will see them taking advantage of their position (in the corporate space) through innovation. When was the last time you had of a new product launch from them? Kiania D. On 12/18/10, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

I meant fiber to the home, not the inter city fiber, but the one that shares KPLC poles to residential and commercial areas. Not seen any other ISP using it
