Proposed Tax bill to impose VAT on zero rated consumer goods
Finance minister Njeru githae has published a tax bill to impose VAT on consumer goods that had been zero rated among them maize, rice, wheat, sugar, milk, edible vegetable fats and oil, fertilisers and pesticides. This will push up the prices by between 10% and 16% thus making common mwananchi to suffer more. I think this is the right move, since whenever these goods are zero-rated, the benefits never spill down to the common mwananchi, so you'd rather have the government get the money than a few scrupulous individuals - IMHO. @Kibe, It all depends on which side of the fence you stand. While to a common person that's continuously pushing him to the periphery, to the rich, that's how the economy grows. I think, with my little knowledge on tax, the minister is setting a bad precedence on almost everything. I heard that he wants to re-introduce Road Licences, as a security measure, yet, in real terms, a smart card solution for every motor vehicle registered in Kenya could be invested in. By so doing, among other things, the ecomony will be left in the hands of the few while the majority continue to languish in poverty, unending debts, low incomes against high expenditures among others. @okechukwu while that in most cases is true, it offers competitive edge (unless where there is a quota system) to importers, so price have a marginal dip because they have some significant leverage within which they can price-compete.. in doing away with the tax holiday, this moves the competition playground to xx + tax na kuendelea.
