Techies.. Its about time - our own governing body is over due

Dear Skunks, I believe its about time that the techies came together to form an association like any other group of professionals. The doctors, Lawyers, Architects, Engineers, finance. They have a body that governs their businesses and that sets forth certain standards that even employers have to adhere to. This way we can take all the talent available and we can nature over time graduating professions from one stage to another and eventually they can become e.g. senior partners as auditors and lawyers would refer them. In this case probably it would be Senior Technical Partner I am talking of a body consisting of duly elected or designated representatives and IT professionals from all walks joining and forming a very strong team that even the Government its self would recognize and will be coming to us for consultation let alone advice on matters of technology and its innovation/ investments. For example with the ICT city coming up soon, we should be at the fore front coming up with plans of what we envision the next techie power house will entail. Setting up standards that investors will come to adhere to so that they dont come thinking that Kenya is a cheap labor country where they can misuse our painfully earned expertise. More so, this can be used to protect its members from possible exploitation in the market place, I mean the possibilities are endless. We need to set the pace for the rest of Africa to emulate and who knows you might find them requesting for membership having gained recognitions world wide... My thoughts, Lets deliberate on this, lets look at the possibilities, keeping an open mind.. This could be it.... Warm Regards Oliver

ill draw you to first principles, who are we as defined by "techies". what disciplines are we talking about here? On Tue, Aug 24, 2010 at 5:28 PM, Oliver Ndegwa <olie.ndegwa@gmail.com>wrote:

Makes sense Collins, there is no profession as Techie, lets join existing organisations and be reformers, reformers are influencers, we should only go for existing associations when there is real need. @ Jacob precisely my point. The thing is we all have something in common and skunk works defines that pretty well by managing to put us together in this list and forum. We have similar interests and a similar line of thoughts, technically speaking. One thing from an engineer or an architect or a scientists, we have a connection somewhere and I believe this is what we are trying to define. Strange thing is our lines are extremely diverse because we handle both Information and communication. The question of joining an existing body is probably a good idea but it would probably put the professionals apart from each other. Imagine a systems Auditor, what would be his association of choice. This is a guy who has a good understanding of infrastructure, databases and is into research of evolving technologies so that his opinion is always up to date with the trends.. If there was one body for ICT it would govern the whole spectrum and each of us would have a sense of belonging. Oliver On Wed, Aug 25, 2010 at 9:19 AM, Jacob Odada <jacob.odada@gmail.com> wrote:

If there was one body for ICT it would govern the whole spectrum and each of us would have a sense of belonging.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skunk_Works http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skunkworks_project Skunkworks seems to be a group of hard core chaps from different scentific backgrounds who come together or brought together to do some *radically innovative* project. Kind of reminds me of a movie where this large commet was going to crash into earth and they got like the worlds best driller, a nuclear explosive expert, a couple of astronauts to fly the ships and they went and blew it into two to change its trajectory - Those must have been skunks! -- Jangita | +256 76 91 8383 | Y! & MSN: jangita@yahoo.com Skype: jangita | GTalk: jangita.nyagudi@gmail.com
