Read an article some time back (cant trace it now ) that said the problem is that the guys making the hardware and the guys making the software are from different camps. hence each takes care of his end. hardware guys deliver juice while software guys code for maximum utility from the OS and apps. The result is that there is little emphasis on maximum saving of I/O cycles and perfect sync between hardware and software. That is why Apple, RIM and Symbian devices have excellent battery life. The software is a complement of the hardware.
