OK. I see the stats. And your point being?

Anyway, I see the IDEOS brigade are out in full force and for good reason. I'm one of them with no problems so far, hardware or otherwise. I think the point many are missing here by bashing the handset is that currently, it is the cheapest Droid device in the market and the experience is the same (well, almost). For the record, I have used many Huawei products before like Orange wireless desk phones, Quidway routers, CDMA & GSM handsets and even the Safaricom modems. Fantastic budget products. The IDEOS is no exception.

This also reminds me in the 80s when people trashed Japanese products as basement, low quality products. Now very few can afford the Japanese products. China is the new Japan.

If you can afford iPhone, HTC or Samsung, go ahead. Let the rest also experience Android at $100 or less as someone stated earlier. By the way, if I had major hardware issues, I'd be happy to replace the IDEOS even three times at that price...and I'd still not be close the the HTCs. My two cents.

This is a curious argument, this 'average user' is attracted to the OS of the phone but has no idea how to go about getting apps. These average users, are they the same ones who've been driving up the Opera Mini usage stats in Kenya?

I think what sells for the ideos is Android not the hardware. However most apps in Android do not come pre-installed, you have to download them first then install. The average mass user may not be really into the searching and downloading of apps for his phone and will simply expect to accomplish as much with the standard apps. I believe Android has endless possibilities but one has to be an average techie or atleast have some tinkering skills to be able to get apps that will help you do above average stuff.
Safcom's strategy of marketing the phone might be to push more users to data services which are more expensive than voice.

my take.

What's this IDEOS bashing all about, really?

I've bought 5 pieces for myself and relatives since it was launched and not a single one of them has an issue. I also am a heavy user as I use it for SSH, surfing and mails whenever I'm mobile.

I also know of about 10 other guys who have it and I haven't heard of any hardware failures...maybe these people reporting failures molest them
