Rules will never work for the simple reason that discussions will get bogged down on which rules to enforce, how to enforce them, and how often to update the rules. The issue could be relatively easily solved if skunks-ke was a web-based mailing-list with up/down voting features. Comments/threads which members didn't like would be down-voted to oblivion, and good stuff would be up-voted (Engadget, Slashdot and others do this to good effect). The advantage of this is that there would be no static rules in place, just a community dynamically downgrading/upgrading comments/threads they dislike/like. On the other hand, maybe skunks-ke is stuck with an email-only list in which case some sort of rules may be in order. But to be brutally honest: if you strip out OT and ads, what else is discussed on this list? Practically nothing. Then perhaps the focus should be on how to stimulate meaningful discuss (instead of only on how to exclude unwanted discussions). I second this. . unlike throwing out all the rules we can have a thread discussing what to keep and what not and the admins can create a form of some sort to vote through. . and the voting be made mandatory such that you are not able to receive email without voting . . ..
My thoughts.

Hello Skunks,
A while back, the list administrators wanted to implement some rules regarding off topic items, job advertisements and flaming, among other things but upon protests from many on the list (myself included),they shelved the idea. However, watching what goes on on the list day in day out, I think its time skunkworks developed some sort of method to SELF regulate.
My proposal is that the list admins come up with a set of rules that they think will help mitigate the problems most rampant on this list.We as skunkworks can then vote on the rules and choose to keep a number of them. e.g the admins come up with ten rules and we vote to keep five that we deem to be most important. This is basically a call for us to acknowledge that this list is presumed to carry the best brains in the techie world in Kenya and we should thus hold ourselves to a higher standard than would be acceptable were this not the case. The list is becoming a joke if it isn't already one. We can stop the rot. What do skunks think?
