So this is not a straight forward Q&A. Apart from the standard contention
ratios, you have to consider what a 'user' perceives as good internet and
the location of 'that internet'. Zuku's service when you try to access
locally hosted content works really well. So its really easy to tell they
have an issue on the transit end. And no Torrents are not the problem, your
package is just wrong. Take this as a lesson, scrap the weirdly named
packages and make people pay. Safaricom pulled the unlimited internet
nonsense, Im sure Zuku can survive a re-packaging too.
I blame it on poor planning right from how they (most ISP's) allocate IP's
(different user groups - read depending on how much you pay) should be
aggregatable. This would make it easy for them to segment customers. This
is an issue with most ISP's not just Zuku.
Others have a really nice network but their
sales/marketing/product/catalogue producing guys are clueless about how
they can offer them to us. If you are an ISP with 10G of capacity between
different towns and havent figured out a business model something is really
really wrong.
Thats how you end up with silly products like unlimited internet or buy
4Mbps for ksh2500. Whats even worse is how easy customers are taken by the
buzz words. ie you get what you pay for.
My advice especially if this is a service for business:
1: Multihome.
2: Make sure you explain exactly what your needs are. If you want a 4Mbps
circuit to london, say it, pay for it. Yes nothing is free, that is part of
the problem. We are used to cheap crap then complain when it doesn't work.
For the rest of us I think we're okay with the amorphous net services we
get:-)
