It is much safer and easier to work with a lower IOS than with the latest one. Just try 4.1 or 4.2.1. I have been trying to restore several 3G's to 5.1.1 to know avail. Solomon, if you are good at it, why dont you give me the directions? Or I can come to your workshop/office see how you do it. Whichever suits you.

Upgrade the phone to IOS 5.1.1 and then do an untethered jailbreak with the latest version of redsnow. Some of the common recovery errors can be fixed with tinyumbrella, but before you go to tiny umbrella, edit your hosts file and make sure the url with the 3gs update site in it is commented out.
