I disagree with such sweeping generalizations. It's not about 'cuteness'. It's about the ability to develop usable, real world software. .NET is cute but not really viable for most open source deployments and also for linux / unix deployments ... and that is a critical factor for many. You've got a look at not just java ... but other programming stacks built on top of it ... e.g. Groovy/Grails ... JRuby ...
