Interesting. And I thought that traffic is reduced by keeping the space between you and the car ahead as minimal as possible to prevent overlappers from cutting in front of you.

There's also the waiting thing when drivers slow down to see what's causing an accident and the seconds end up building over time and a jam is created when it could have been avoided (the jam that is).
