@wash sorry for the delayed response. To a noob and techies as well, user experience on linux will be about the desktop environment, theming and available packages. Most of these distros don't vary much cause they use. Deb or rpm or their variants. I have a sneaky feeling the rpm pms is better engineered. But the deb has better support. That said, they all use the same linux kernel and applications. My best advise would be install Ubuntu, activate all possible repositories, enable automatic updates and tell her to press alt f2 every fourth and tenth month.
