Is it an issue of leaving it charging overnight or using the wrong chargers for a long time? I have experienced this when I use none HTC chargers. Think it does depend on make and how recent the phone is - I have never had a single issue with an iPhone since iPhone2 with overnight charging, and have never heard of anyone having an issue with the same.
