I always prefer a degree as it opens you up to more areas though you will not necessarily specialize in them. Your first job will decide which area to specialize in. eg. I always wanted to specialize deveolpment in software, but after the first job, I took to networking. You may not get training in the company that employs you, but certifications are cheaper and take shorter time (Good if you have a tight schedule at work).
