This is really a good idea. The main advantages will be that it will be much easier to follow specific topics and not have to download all the emails when in EDGE areas. And not being the victim of email harvesters. I see no need of any redesign of the forum. It is the content and ease of use that is important. But for security reasons an upgrade to the latest version? It is IMHO usually a very good idea to keep the structure very simple initially like: Main, Off-Topic, Buying, Selling and add new categories after a while instead when admins see how it is being used. Moderation with clear rules usually makes a better forum.
