Anyway, I am wondering when Access Kenya, KDN etc will switch to the Fiber. "Networks are not run like this", to quote Aki :)
This is where i would want to believe that being an ISP that for instance had committed to buying XMbps from a satellite provider there are penalties that come with quiting the contracts without notice.
I would bet the same would apply to many other things in life. My assumption (and this is purely hypothetical) is that we have to wait until the satellite contracts expire and renewed in favor of the fiber circuits.
This bit also excludes the part where folks have to go and buy transit beyond the landing points given by SEACOM i.e India (pune?) and London. That doesnt come overnight. It means folks have to put up kit at various colo's for termination (more contracts with collo's). If they didnt have the kit they have to buy it. Then negotiate peering and transit (more contracts). Then run tests with a couple of idle prefixes. Once everyones happy with everything - agree on a start date and then service starts then.
The other option is to ofcourse buy transit from someone who has already brought it to Kenya which will be more expensive.
So yeah its probably alot of paperwork and investment needed to be done before things go live. If folks didnt start this process like 3-4 months ago, then it means we have about 1-3 months (with all things constant and accelerated plans) which means folks wont also be in a position to negotiate for good deals too.
What can i say - i hope someone started this way before the launch! :)
@Mich, You nailed it! I am not asking any providers when they are switching over anymore, but pray that they were prepared for this. Given that providers like KDN were going round signing up clients in readiness, I can only imagine they started their preparations way back. We've been so treated to a "hype" ;-) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube
