But at least it won't go beyond Ksh 8 (the old rate on Ongea). -----Original Message----- From: Job Muriuki <muriukin@gmail.com> Reply-to: Skunkworks forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> To: Skunkworks forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Subject: [Skunkworks] Super Ongea Tariff Date: Thu, 17 Sep 2009 10:11:54 +0300 Why do i have the feeling this tariff is out to make more from users. If you check the rate right now and its say 2sh. There is no guarantee if you call 2 seconds later that will be the rate you will be charge at so you may end up talking more only to find the rate changed. Or even the documents required to apply for post pay such as PIN certificate - despite it being free to acquire - or utility bill as it's either in the house owner's name or another individuals name. Then there is that deposit!

How many Kenyans are able to afford post pay. i think that is where the point is. Most users dont have guaranteed permanent income

This is an excerpt from an online article .. PostPay subscribers have also started enjoying huge discounts, especially during off-peak hours. All Safaricom PostPay subscribers, individual and corporate, have been automatically migrated to a new discounted tariff, which offers on-net call discounts of up to 85%, off the previous rate of KES7 per minute. They will now be able to call at a low of Ksh1 a minute between midnight and 6am and KES5 between 8pm and midnight. Calls between 6am to 8pm will be charged at KES7 per minute.
What a joke...

I think for postpaid to work and get value for such service we need to
rethink how to punish defaulters of a contract. Both the parties, the customer and service provider. In developed countries you don't default on a contract and walk away. If we have consequences then providers will have a reason to give real offers on the prepay. And whats with telcos with promoting on net traffic, they should have quality services to lure customers to their side not on the pricing alone. What happened to number portability.
Apart from phone contracts - such as the discounted iPhone etc, we pay a deposit equal to the maximum limit, both on Zain and Safaricom, so for me it's a zero sum game, they almost always have my money. When my usage hit's my deposit, I'm automatically disconnected. Worst case scenario for them is me not paying and them reimbursing themselves with the deposit. Additionally, I don't understand why we are not at least 10-15% cheaper as they don't have to go through a channel. When I pay 1000, it all goes to Safaricom. When you buy the equivalent scratch card, some goes to the shop keeper, more to the distributore etc. And you don't have a fixed monthly fee (252, Safaricom, 350 Zain). Basically you get a raw deal.
